BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) A federal aviation official says a large UPS cargo plane has crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Ala.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen tells The Associated Press that the A300 plane crashed on approach to the airport before dawn Wednesday. [snip]
No other details at this time

That’s a big FN plane. Hopefully, it was a relatively unpopulated area.
I think in the US they fly cargo mainly these days but not commercially with any carrier. Someone can correct me on that.
What?
Libyan Sa-7/SA-18/S-24 MANPADs?
I meant the aircraft. The A300. Does any US carrier fly them commercially?
The last two hits on flight aware seem to show they were fast and descending at a shallow rate at 1,500 ft above ground (normally that’s about 5 miles out)
Ah. I’m not sure. I know FedEx has a bunch of them. Not sure about any passenger airlines.
I must admit that the thought did cross my mind. Especially with the reports about Benghazi and a reported 400 Manpads having been ‘disappeared’.

Thanks, I can look at the chart, but I can’t eyeball it and make sense of it all.
I’m guessing it would probably take more than one to bring it down.
A lot of big storms and bad weather down here in Alabama the yesterday and last night. Probably weather related.
Update says two bodies found. Very sad.
Dammit. That’s awful.
I agree, my wife is friends with a couple of women whose husbands are pilots for UPS. Lot of Praying going on right now.
Prayers for all involved... :(
Sad, family of the crew might just be waking up to the news and hear it from media first.
I wonder if the tower had an idea there was a problem?
