Obviously we don't know what happened here, so all of this is uninformed speculation.
However
When the BF kills Mom and the siblings, the GF is often behind the crime. Just as when a divorceé is murdered, it makes sense to check out the ex-husband, this type of crime often is more Juliet than Romeo.
