Two children died after a python got into an apartment in Campbellton, N.B., RCMP say.
"Police are investigating two sudden deaths of two young boys," Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh said Monday.
It's believed the snake escaped from a pet store called Reptile Ocean. The victims were boys aged five and seven. They were visiting a friend in the apartment above the store, police said in a statement released Monday.
Initial information indicates the snake got into the ventilation system and then into the apartment upstairs.
"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said, noting that autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow in Saint John.

They could clean them out with a simple bounty system. Pay per pound and have open hunting.
Gear for attention whores.
I agree with you. A constrictor such as a python or a boa would asphyxiate its victim, then consume it. It would not leave 2 dead prey items. They don’t kill for fun, like a sheep-killing dog or something.
Good lord. May they rest in peace, the poor little guys.
Pet python kills man in Indiana

LANESVILLE, Ind. (AP) A 14-foot pet python crushed its owner to death, authorities said Tuesday after finding the snake loose in a southern Indiana shed with the man’s body.
Patrick Von Allmen, 23, was found Monday evening in the shed near Lanesville, about 15 miles west of Louisville
A medical examiner determined that the death was consistent with asphyxiation caused by compression of the neck and chest, said Conservation Officer Mark Farmer.
Yup. They have a program on TV about people who get dangerous pets (venomous snakes, tigers, lions, etc.) and are killed by them. Young guy was talking to a friend on the phone and the line went dead. They found him a later when he didn’t show up for work ... the snake had been loose and struck him, wrapped him with his arms against his body and suffocated him. Bite marks on the head suggested it tried to eat him, but he was too big. They are definitely a danger ... not arguing that point. One kid I would not question.
That’s awful. Somebody must have been starving the snake, because we stink pretty badly to them. Most pythons I knew preferred not to kill their prey before swallowing them.
That is what I’m thinking, exactly.
Horrifying!
Pythons are a big problem in FL. FL has had their share of horror stories with these snakes.
Sad to see young kids die from this
Long-tailed grass lizard, Takydromus sexlineatus
Couple things. They just like to kill? They don’t do it because they’re just hungry? So much for snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them.
Great, it isn’t enough that we have to worry about a Zombie Apocalypse, now we have to worry about snakes off the plane too? Wait till they leave the swamps of FL and start looking into homes for prey.
They have already had some bounty hunts, but apparently the problem is that the snakes are hard to spot. One article I read (from February) said that in a month-long bounty hunt, only 50 snakes were caught. The total number is estimated at tens of thousands.
Of course, it doesn't sound like they were paying per pound. If they upped the price, maybe someone would come up with some better snake-locating technology.
I just saw an explanation that if not hungry they will kill if they perceive a threat and then not eat.
Yep. They’ve got to make the bounty worth while.
Same with the Asian carp and the great lakes. They’ve got all these multi-billion dollar schemes from dams to nets, but if they dumped that money into bounties per pound of fish, and make it significant money per pound, then they get rid of the Asian carp.
And they’d provide (shovel) fish pole ready jobs. :>)
I have a VERY hard time believing this story.
I’m with you — I don’t believe this story, at least in terms of the way it’s presented in the article.
First of all, boa constrictors don’t get that big — maybe 10-12 feet, unlike large burmese or reticulated pythons, which can get much larger. That is potentially big enough to kill a five year old, but pretty unlikely.
Also, I don’t know the pet store, so maybe they had a full grown boa constrictor as a display animal, but typically pet stores only carry younger, smaller constrictors. Then again, it appears to be a reptile specialty store, so maybe.
Still, I’m trying to picture any scenario at all where the snake strikes (since the kids are too big to be prey, it’s hard to imagine why it would strike at all), and strangles one kid (which does take some time), while the other kid waits around till the snake is finished so he can be strangled too. I’m also trying to imagine a scenario where a snake like that serially attacks two times, one after the other.
Something is really not right about this story.
