New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is losing part of his arsenal of local leaders as more and more long-time members of his gun-control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns say they arent happy with the coalitions trajectory and want out.
While the group apparently is growing in membership overall amid an effort to assume a larger profile in the national gun debate, it's turning some members off. In the past five months, 50 members of the group have quit.
Many say they did so because the organization abandoned its mission statement of going after illegal guns, and instead used its political clout to go after lawmakers who supported gun rights.
Most recently, the mayors of Rockford, Ill., and Nashua, N.H., dropped out after saying they felt misled by Bloomberg.
Nashua Mayor Donnalee Lozeau says she called it quits after the group launched television attack ads against New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte. Ayotte voted against legislation that would have expanded background checks to cover almost every gun purchase in the country.
I said, Wait a minute. I dont want to be part of something like that, Lozeau told The Manchester Union Leader. I told them, Youre Mayors Against Illegal Guns; youre not mayors for gun control.
While the hits to membership have stung for Bloomberg, the organization is still the countrys leading gun control group and offers a counter-voice to the National Rifle Association. MAIG was co-founded in 2006 by Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. According to its web site, the group started off with 15 members but has ballooned to 950 mayors from 45 states, representing Republicans, Democrats and Independents from large cities and small towns across the country.
That's still a fraction, though, of the total number of mayors and local executives in the country -- representing just 5...

NYC's nanny is looking at the White House in 2016, maybe as a 2012 "No Labels" redux.
It’s not nice to pi**of mommy.

Actually, DonnaLee, they *are* mayors for gun control. Glad you wised up.
I call BS. In true liberal political fashion, most of those wanting out of the deal have realized they picked the wrong side. Now that elections are coming up, they needed a way out. They are now claiming ignorance and deception?
They didn’t know where Bloomberg stood on gun rights issues? Really?
NYC without Wall Street is the next Detroit.
Bottom line, they are mayors and socialists for people control, and self enrichment.
Surprise surprise, liberal Democrats lied and their true ambition is gun control, gun bans and gun confiscation.
My mayor (a moderate pubbie) said really.
I was pissed when I found out that he was a member. He said that he thought it was dedicated to removing guns from gangs. When he was still a member a couple of months later I confronted him about it again. This time he just said "I haven't gotten around to it (quitting) yet." Not too long after that he told me that he was no longer a member.
BTW: he's not seeking reelection.
ahhh, the old bait and switch scam...
I wonder if the IRS is demanding they release their member list and/or donor lists?
A member of this MAIG group is Arkadi Gerney, founder of a political group called The Hub.
