M-L came up with a splendid idea. She thought I should show Beethoven grow as an artist by following his piano sonatas. This is a very good concept for a number of reasons, which I will go into next week.

This week I’m just going to post some miscellaneous Beethoven.

Beethoven’s Septet for mixed winds and strings was a huge success. The scherzo movement was arranged for piano, piano with strings, music boxes and hurdy-gurdies. It got to be so bad that Beethoven couldn’t go two steps in Vienna without hearing it. He was to say, “I wish I’d never written the damn thing.” I often feared he said, “Jeez, I wish God would strike me deaf so I don’t have to listen to it anymore.”

This is as catchy as it gets.

Beethoven: Septet in E-flat, Op. 20, scherzo
