Forget hacking accounts, computers or mobile devices - security engineers from Indiana have managed to hack the software inside the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape. Using a laptop wirelessly connected to the car's electronics, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek were able to remotely control the brakes, the accelerate, change the speedometer, switch the headlights on and off, tighten the seatbelts and even blast the horn. The project was funded by a grant from the U.S Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to highlight the security risks affecting modern-day cars. Miller, a security engineer at Twitter, and Valasek, Director of Security Intelligence at IOActive, are due to officially announce their findings at the Def Con 21 conference in Vegas the weekend of the 1-3 Augus

I’m glad these hackers were successful. Now maybe all the conspiracy nuts will shut up. It IS possible.
I’m also glad my Chevy pickup is old enough to not have all the latest electronics.
Black box recorders are coming to all cars in the 2015 model year. That’s just a little over a year away:

33 feet to the repeater/transceiver the spook stuck on your car.
It talks to the satellite.
Even if a car has an automatic transmission, isn’t using the shift lever mechanical? If it is, you could shove the thing into “PARK” and stop it that way.
On many models, no.
Old reliable. If we are attacked by EMP, you would either be totally unaffected or up and running with a quick points and coil change.
Very interesting. Looking more like a hit all the time.
But...but...this can't be! Only the operator of a vehicle can do all that!! Wait!....Doesn't this mean that Michael Hastings was.....never mind. He wuz DRUNK > *hiccup* sez the Feebs, investigation, and autopsy...wait -- what investigation? WHAT autopsy? Ok, then let's dig up the corpse!....wait...the remains have been incinerated at 100 billion degrees. Never mind again.
Hastings = baaaad driver!
Points would be ok, the cap on the coil would be bad as well as the alternator. Your radio would be fried too.
Actually the cap would only be hit if the points were open.
if you had a generator, it would be fine.
As a side note to this kind of technology, please consider the following. I don't know anything about drone technology, but couldn't a drone likewise be hijacked and used as a weapon?
You could plant a bluetooth device on a car, and communicate with the device through other means (cell phone, satellite, etc.)
A warning to whistleblowers to keep their traps shut maybe
The steering on all cars is a mechanical linkage. They apparently were able to tamper with the power assist. I don’t see any way that they are able to change the direction of the steering.
Lo Jack has some of this capability along with On Star. The police can shut down the cars systems to catch a thief or hijacker. Don’t know the technical side of it but Orwell, we are here.
One word - Hastings.
As a guy who has designed the park mechanism in an automatic transmission, I can tell you they are designed to NOT engage above a certain (low) speed. Otherwise it would rip the housing apart due to the forces involved.
True, but most cars have had downloadable data from the powertrain controller for a decade or more.
Next up, real life Knight Rider and My Mother the Car!
Thanks guys.
Only IF you still have control over the brake.
