A heartening poll by Rasmussen shows 85 percent of Americans believe Christian wedding photographers have the right to refuse to service a gay wedding. In a country that increasingly forgets the value of free speech, its surprisingly refreshing to see a strong majority in the right column.
The same applies, of course, to wedding cake bakers. Hopefully the memo reaches David Mullins and Charlie Craig, who have enlisted the help of the ACLU to sue a Denver, CO bakery for allegedly refusing a cake for their wedding. The complaint seeks to force Masterpiece Cakeshop to cease and desist the practice of refusing wedding cakes for gay couples, and to tell the public that their business is open to everyone, reports FOX News. If [the defendant] loses the case and refuses to comply with the order, he would face fines of $500 per case and up to a year in jail, his attorney said.

We’ll find out soon enough.
Ugh. Yet another Vichy Conservative.
Did you support dumping DOMA too?
Churches have always had state recognition of their marriages. The state cannot strip something that predates the formation of the state. Giving that up voluntarily will give the state the opportunity to ‘derecognize’ Christian marriages.
Not so. They’ve already attacked the Episcopalian, Unitarian, Presbyterian, UMC etc.
And they’ve been successful in getting all of these denominations to capitulate.
I suspect they will target the Baptists before they target the Catholic church.
Best answer is to ask what flowers they want and when they want it. Then - after consulting your calendar, inform that you’re already booked.
Then preachers will still be required to do them if asked.
All the news lately has really disturbed and distressed me.
I believe the only way out is secession, or revolution.
Look at Detroit, in 10 years the country will look exactly like Detroit, and then it will be kill or be killed.
“Tell that to a draftee...” Wow. Are you kidding, Kip Russell?
You are correct. And every denomination that has endorsed homosexuality is losing members at an astronomical rate. Look at the disciples of Christ denomination. Their membership is down 50% in the last decade
All churches have to do is stop signing the marriage license. No more state sanction - no more strings. The marriage becomes a religious rite again.
Hetero couple would have to see the Justice of the Peace for their legal marriage - if they want it.
The churches did the government a favor when they chose to act as agents of the state. A religious marriage does not make a legal marriage.
The state has a vested interest in knowing the marriage status of people, for everything from inheritance to tax rates.
If the state now has to do ALL of its own marrying, then the cost to the state increases, but so does their influence over the churches. The churches agreed to marry people legally because the state wanted them to - not the other way around.
Bump
Right. This means nothing. Not long ago, 85% scoffed against legalized sodomite “marriage”.
As the Judeo-Christian ethic is abandoned, all freedoms—including religious freedom—will be lost.
Look for backlash to come from conservative churches if that happens.
Revolt is coming.
These bastards are targeting Christian businesses to put their boot on the neck and show them who has the power. They are agitators. There purpose is to destroy those who disagree with them.
I'm afraid if some business attempted to bow out by claiming a date was already booked, I bet this group would have someone else come in as a "straight man" to try and book the same date. Bingo, entrapment. A better tactic, at least for a bake shop would be to not make any special order cakes. Make a "big fancy cake", but it is NOT a wedding cake.
An alternate tactic would be for the business to accept the order, because I can just about guarantee that these provocateurs would then suddenly not want the cake or flowers or whatever done by a Christian business; they want a confrontation.
My thoughts too. Before long churches will be forced to close their doors and go back into homes, where they started.
Polls mean nothing to leftist activist judges and to “Human Rights Commissions.”
This is a direct result of the 1963 Civil Rights Act that forces all organizations open to the public to accommodate everyone.
Even non-public organizations like the Augusta Golf Club.
“I’m afraid if some business attempted to bow out by claiming a date was already booked, I bet this group would have someone else come in as a “straight man” to try and book the same date.”
And I am sure that since Christian businesses are now aware that they are being targetted that it would not be difficult for them to cotton onto someone coming back a short time later and choosing the exact same date. ;)
It doesn’t take a Columbo to figure that out.
“A better tactic, at least for a bake shop would be to not make any special order cakes. Make a “big fancy cake”, but it is NOT a wedding cake.”
Again - the best tactic is to refuse to do anything at all due to ‘prior commitments’. A business cannot be forced to take on work that they do not wish to do.
I said that in reference to someone saying, "Nobody can be compelled to work for anybody, that is slavery." How does involuntary military service not qualify as being compelled to work?
“The churches did the government a favor when they chose to act as agents of the state. A religious marriage does not make a legal marriage.”
Yes, it does make a legal marriage. The authority of the priest/minister to marry those within their congregation dates before the establishment of the United States. For american authorities to claim that they no longer have this authority is contrary to the legal history.
“The state has a vested interest in knowing the marriage status of people, for everything from inheritance to tax rates.”
Indeed, but the authority of the minister to legally marry those within his congregation is not a power granted to him by the State.
“If the state now has to do ALL of its own marrying, then the cost to the state increases”
This would imply a subordination of the authority of the priest and minister to the state, a subordination that does not presently exist in law.
“The churches agreed to marry people legally because the state wanted them to - not the other way around.”
Nonsense, church weddings have always been seen as legal since long before the state of America existed.
I would suggest you reread what I wrote.
If the CHURCH unilaterally declines to perform a civil ceremony, the CHURCH takes control over holy matrimony again.
The problem is that the churches carried the government’s water on the civil contract side of modern marriage, and now the government is threatening to take complete control.
If the minister or priest does not sign the marriage certificate, it is not a “legal marriage” - it is not a marriage contract in the eyes of the state. But it would still be a bond of holy matrimony - just not for tax purposes.
