I can imagine, but that doesn't mean they want to be stuck for several hours after their normal shift is done. Believe me, it would really piss me off when some a-hole convict in my area of supervision, decided he was going to do something stupid just before I got relieved to go home. The last thing I wanted to deal with at 11 P.M. was to have to interview inmates, have them seen by medical staff if an altercation had occurred, and having to have the officers involved and myself sit down together to all write memos and reports about what occurred, and the action we took to deal with it. We couldn't go home until it was done...and we still had to show up on time for our next shift, despite what time we finally got home.

I remember reading in the Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, CA local paper, when the police chief was talking about the mounted unit and their efficacy.

“When you are in a rowdy crowd and you hit a cop, you’re a hero; you hit a horse and you’re just a jerk.”

I’ll never forget it.

A buddy of mine on the NYPD said a mounted officer was as effective as 10 foot officers.
