Back in May, a month after Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the states gun control law, Stag Arms of New Britain came up with a modified design and took it to the state police firearms unit to see whether it would pass muster.
The unit was helpful, even making a design suggestion that would help assure the gun would not be classified as an illegal assault weapon. Stag prepared to make the rifle, a .22-caliber version of the military-style AR-15.
Then in June, the state legislature tightened the law in order to correct a few problems. Stag returned with an updated model, seeking an opinion.
But this time, the firearms unit had a different answer.
I was told to get a lawyer, figure it out and if Im wrong Im going to have to deal with it, said Mark Malkowski, the Stag Arms owner and president. Its my responsibility to interpret
I was told we were no longer allowed to bring prototypes in.

People were calling us for interpretations and we hadnt even read the bill ourselves.
Why is any firearms manufacturer still being in CT?
WAKE UP!! THEY DON’T WANT YOU IN CT!! MOVE NOW BEFORE YOU ARE ARRESTED!! IT AIN’T GOING TO GET ANY BETTER!!
And to the NSA trolls, FU.
Very simple.
Make a law that people can’t avoid breaking. Then selectively enforce it to get the desired results.
It’s called fascism.
Stag stays in CT, it deserves to pay every dollar it get fined.
Take a hint. We don't like you, we don't need you and we don't want you. Hit the road and take it somewhere else.
Gov. Malloy
I’m damned sure that ifI make a purchase online or in a store, I’ll make absolutely sure that the product is not from or purchased from CT, CA, and all those other places that are vehement anti-gun zealots. I’m tired of buying from controllers. Colt - you’d better take notice.
The CT state police are under political orders to willfully allow citizens to break laws, is that it?
People generally WANT to follow the rules. By not allowing the people to know what the rules are, the state seeks to entrap the people.
Is this any way to govern a citizenry?
From the lowest levels of government to the highest levels, those in power skirt or ignore the law. What recourse to this do we have, but to become cynical scofflaws ourselves.
*We don’t know. We didn’t know we didn’t know. We didn’t know we were supposed to know.* ....
If “law enforcement” doesn’t know the law, how the hell can they enforce it?
If I owned STAG Arms, I’d be looking for a new address in another state.
bttt
Me too. I guess now the ATF will stop issuing their bullshit opinion letters?
I’m just not gonna buy any gun or ammo or whatever from an enemy state any longer. It takes time to find out when you’re shopping, but choking off their out-of-state resources is a start.
There are states out there that do not share Connecticut's anti-gun bias, where taxes are cheaper, the business environment is better, and the deck isn't stacked against you.
Take your company, along with the taxes you pay, along with the jobs you create and the taxes your employees pay and move to a state where you will be treated with appreciation.
Dannel has basically told the gun manufacturers , leave and take your stinkin’ high paying , highly skilled jobs with you. CT’s future belongs to the newly minted, low skill, underpaid citizen.
Kind of the same way 0bamacare was passed, and is being implemented.
To this day does anyone really know what's in the law?
>>If law enforcement doesnt know the law, how the hell can they enforce it?
In the police state that the US has become, the cops enforce the law based on your “attitude” and their mood. There are too many laws for anyone to enforce them all, so law “enforcement” just does what it pleases.
Now things have progressed beyond that in many states. It is approaching totalitarianism. Companies like Stag Arms is part of the problem. They attempted to work with government when they should have moved to a free state. Now government isn't willing to work with them. Stag had every right to protest and lobby legislators. I'm sure they did, but they loss. The second step that they could have taken (hopefully they will still take) is leave a business and gun unfriendly state. There are plenty of states that have lower taxes, less regulation, better standards of living and strong 2a rights.
Stag needs to hurt CT in the pocket book by leaving CT.
If I were in a 2nd Amendment supporting state and in a position to offer support to gun/ammo manufactures in 2nd Amendment unfriendly states I’d be burning up the phone lines and making trips to those facilities to entice them to leave where they are not wanted and come to where their efforts are appreciated.
There can be no excuse for a firm who depends on a core element of the constitution to remain in a constitution unfriendly state and effectively fund and support your sworn enemy.
Just think of how many businesses SHOULD move to areas of the country more agreeable with their products.
IE: For a multitude of reasons the auto industry should move out of states with enviro-wackos and union thuggery.
The polarization between elitist statist thugs and people who still believe in the Constitution and freedom has reached the point of no return- the tipping point. Short of total ccapitulation by one side or the other another civil war is inevitable.
What the Stag Arms people need to do is to ask the state Attorney General (or the state Attorney General's office staff) rather than the police. The cops are right in this case....their job is to enforce the law, not interpret it.
If they can’t explain the law they don’t understand it. If they don’t understand it they can’t enforce.
I totally disagree
Maybe the Stag owner will get the message when he takes a weapon in to get a determination..and the State Patrol arrests him.
“No sir, your prototype weapon does not conform to the new rules. Oh, and by the way, you’re under arrest. Please put your hands behind your back...”
