Syrian rebels said on Friday the assassination of one of their top commanders by al Qaeda-linked militants was tantamount to a declaration of war, opening a new front for the Western-backed fighters struggling against President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

This isn’t the first report of the rebels fighting among themselves, I read another article a few weeks ago where radical elements attacked the so-called moderates, in fact, the radicals were Al Qaeda, the story was a bit like this one.

What this means is Al Quida thinks they can take
Assad now, without the help of the others, who
would be in contention with them once Assad falls.

The rebel and al-Qaeda were both on the same side, but have turned against each other. So the new front opened in Syria is the rebel against al-Qaeda, not against Assad.
And thus everyone who said that the rebels were all Islamic extremists is proven false.
Well, it seems like the more powerful/effective/significant rebels are the Islamic extremists.
Soon after the thing broke out into open warfare, after the first waves of army defections, the sort-of-secular bunch seem to have become rather irrelevant.
