Probably because most journalists and commentators alive today remember the sh*tstorm that Bernard Shaw kicked off when he asked Mike Dukakis (in one of the 1988 POTUS debates) what he'd do if someone were to rape and kill Kitty.

Certain lines of questioning - many of them completely appropriate in my opinion - are definitely off-limits.
