It is the duty of every honest person to write the truth about Stalin, Anton Antonov-Ovseyenko, a Soviet historian and dissident, wrote in the preface of his seminal book The Time of Stalin: Portrait of a Tyranny, published illegally in 1981.
A survivor of the gulag whose parents died in Stalins purges, Mr. Antonov-Ovseyenko spent a lifetime in almost fanatical devotion to that duty, working until his death on Tuesday in Moscow at 93 to expose the darkest truths of the Soviet era.
His books cracked through the shell of Soviet censorship that surrounded much of the Stalin-era brutality, offering readers at home and in the West a vivid portrait of tyranny and violence. . .

Funny coming from the same New York Times that no doubt believes Stalin had the right idea, but just wasn’t all hip and casual like Obama.

Poor guy lived just long enough to witness Obama pick up, where Stalin had left it.

Our gulags will be much better, and will feature delightful state programming available in hi-def, Michelle Meals (TM), and plenty of work, to set us free.

If we take into account his stand on abortion, he’s above the million mark.

The only difference between Hitler,Stalin and Mao is that the last two were somewhat more subtle about their hopes of world conquest than the first.

"A Russian hero."There must be many stories of great heroic people like this man.
These stories would probably make great movies.
Then again, Hollywood won't make them. They wouldn't want people might notice similarities between the Stalin era, and our government today.
Prayers for Mr. Ovseyenko's family.
I'm going to see if his book is still available.

His father, Vladimir, was a Menshevik turned Bolshevik with the usual blood on his hands during the Russian Civil War and aftermath. Vladimir Antonov-Ovseyenko was killed during Stalin's terror of the late thirties.
