The only difference between Hitler,Stalin and Mao is that the last two were somewhat more subtle about their hopes of world conquest than the first.

His father, Vladimir, was a Menshevik turned Bolshevik with the usual blood on his hands during the Russian Civil War and aftermath. Vladimir Antonov-Ovseyenko was killed during Stalin's terror of the late thirties.

We knew a lot about the gulag before 1981. One Day in the Life was published in the 60’s and I saw the movie in the 70’s.
