Meet Captain Rachelle Jones and F.O Stephanie Grant. They fly for Delta's regional carrier Southeast Atlantic.
These are the key words and is what makes this story worth taking note of. It was not engineered, like so many other situations.
Bravo to Delta's Atlantic Southeast Airlines and their management for doing the right thing without gov’t coersion. I bet these two AMERICANS will do the industry proud for a long time to come.
All I care about is can they fly?
One way to tell they might be qualified is you pronounce their names which means they possibly had good parents.
Foiled again!
I’m happy for them, but I don’t care at all what shade their skin is or that they’re female.
There is something wrong with people who jump up and down for joy over the first minority anything. People are people. The important thing is that all are held to the same standard regardless of minority status.
It’s significant that it’s black WOMEN who achieved this milestone. Meanwhile, their bros are wearing hoodies and baggy pants and shooting each other to the tune of 5,000-6,000 per year.
Now We Have Proof !
There sure is a lot of vitriol on this thread. I like this kinda of ‘first’. Not a big media hyped fake first. No just a random moment. This shows us how far we have come. How far we have REALLY come, not how far some fake hyped event can make it look like we have.
This stuff matters. Yeah affirmative action is crap and all that... we all know that. But my parents can remember when there were ‘white only’ water fountains for crying out loud. Sometimes it is nice to look up and realize how far we have come. I find it heartwarming. Unlike the crew of that 777 these ladies apparently knew how to land.
Would the same hoopla have been made if the crew had been all Asian, Native American etc.? Slavery ended 150 years ago and the Jim Crow laws have been gone for half a century. Blacks have every opportunity to access jobs as everybody else and with affirmative action get preference sometimes even over more qualified non Blacks. This shouldn’t be news except in our current racially divided nation.
Are they any good? Do they know what they're doing?
If "yes", great! I don't care what their skin colour or plumbing looks like.
If "no" ... then get the damned incompetent, racist, sexist morons off the flight deck!!!
So. What? Does anyone think these girls said to themselves, “I’m going to fly because I’m black”?
Anyway, where are their pilot caps?
Nothing scarier than affirmative action pilots. Except maybe brane surgeons.
Does this stuff really matter any more? I suppose it’ll be interesting when the first crew of left-handed Chinamen “makes aviation history” but really, does it warrant a news article?
But, why are we still congratulating them for the color of their skin, rather than simply that they've earned cool jobs?
Yes, we all have come a long way, but clearly, we still have a ways to go until we see the sameness with our hearts' eye view, instead of the differences our physical eyes and some egos get stuck on seeing.
I'd like to fly with them...once the TSA nazis have been banished.
The co-pilot's hot, too.
The way she's looking at me...I think she likes me...I definitely like her!
I’d feel better about them if they were looking forward.
