If that ends up being the cause of the crash, then it would be very similar to Delta Flight 723 that crashed at Logan on July 31, 1973 in heavy fog. In that crash, the landing was too soon and the landing gear hit a seawall. The plane then skidded down the runway and burst into flames. Nobody survived but there was one survivor who lasted a few months with severe burns.

That crash has special meaning for me because my father was on the scene, he worked at the airport at the time, and because the doomed plane passed right over my head seconds before crashing. We lived in East Boston at the time and our house was right under the flight path.

I grew up in Winthrop, and as a kid, sailed in those waters that are now part of the runways. When I’ve gone back to Winthrop, I duck when those planes fly over!!

There is technology today that tells the pilot where the plane is in relation to the ground.
For example this technology can tell the pilot if the plane is about to run into a mountain or not if there was fog or bad weather coming into land.
With this plane sounds like something happened in mid air just seconds or minutes before landing.
