Currently just Tweets and locals talking about this, nothing on news sites yet. Lots of stuff in the Twitter feed, including links to uploaded videos of the smoking mess.
For us non-pilots, when you say "An inop ground station ILS which was not accounted for by the pilots.", I understand that you mean that the instrument landing system was inoperative for the two runways. What I don't understand is why that would not be glaringly obvious to the pilot as he made his approach, and how it might contribute to the crash.
Not to confused with Fuddruckers where once you have garnished your hamburger you go to your table and eat it. I can’t hear the difference.
I wish you ladies would take this outside.
That’s an interesting socialogical aspect. I’d already considered the “copilot might not want to correct a pilot due to age/seniority” aspect, but then you bring up a great point. There’s also the “pilot doesn’t want to lose face and go around” aspect.
“The FAA said the ill-fated plane may have collided with something after it landed on the runway’s threshold, with local media showing video clips on YouTube and television footage of the plane’s emergency evacuation slides being deployed and people fleeing the wreckage. Skies seemed to have been clear at the time of the accident.”

OK, but the ill fated plane should be clearing the runway threshold by 50’ or so. The point here is that the plane should be landing 1000’ to 1500’ from the threshold. The purpose of this is to allow adequate clearance for the landing gear over the threshold. This flight seemed to actually contact the rock berm between the concrete runway and San Francisco Bay! Ouch! It may have “collided” with what?
because uninformed commentary is much easier (not mention cheaper) to find on short notice.
And the reason there is no need is two-fold. One is doesn't help the situation in any way and two everyone knows that the idiots making the announcement haven't a f***ing clue if they are telling the truth.
Initial reports said the pilots were reassigned to the left runway while on final. If so, then my guess is they moved over but that lost them 50-75 feet they failed to correct for by adding additional power; turns, horizontal lift, you understand that point perfectly I am sure. The sight picture changed but the pilot took the risk instead of adding power or executing a go-around. As you said, the fuselage looked like a high AOA impact. The passengers in the back no doubt took a massive G-force hit.
Like what?
Just look at the most recent pics of that bulkhead. Thin is a relative term. it's peeled back like a tin can.
At altitude it must withstand something like 10 tons or more of pressure. Seconds from touchdown, the internal and external pressures had to be equal.
So, like what? An out-of-control food/drink service cart just prior to landing? What?
Ten tons or... ?
Yeah, sorry about the misspell I was in a hurry to post that before going to the store...
That’s just cold!!! lol. You should add, “FU Airbus!”
Here is another news snippet I find interesting.
“San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the investigation has been turned over to the FBI and terrorism has been ruled out. “
—The Pueblo Chieftan
Why would the FBI investigate a plain old transportation disaster?
Now, if it ISN’T terrorism, then only the NTSB needs to be involved.
Here is an eyewitness report according to the Pueblo Chieftan.
Then all of a sudden I saw what looked like a cloud of dirt puffing up and then there was a big bang and it kind of looked like the plane maybe bounced (as it neared the ground), she said. I couldnt really tell what happened, but you saw the wings going up and (in) a weird angle.
Not like it was cartwheeling, she said, but rather as though the wings were almost swaying from side to side.
Eyewitness says plane was in an unstable state on approach.
If it’s foggy and the plane is 1000 feet 500 feet to 100 feet off the ground I am sure they would be checking that system.
Wow, very interesting, thank you for the ping.
