Currently just Tweets and locals talking about this, nothing on news sites yet. Lots of stuff in the Twitter feed, including links to uploaded videos of the smoking mess.

Why is it we can put men on the moon but we can’t make a radio communication that anyone can understand?

Did I hear “go around”?

That, and I could never get used to a throttle control on the left wall. A strict discipline of one hand on the yoke and one hand on the thrust at all times left me awkward in the cub. A stick in the middle and power where the ash tray should be is a bit confusing. The plywood and canvas was strange too.

No strange shutdown shimmy and rumble like you get in an aluminum skinned Aztruck.

I gave it up in 2002. Cost and culture basis shifted. Daughters in private schools and then to college and law school, put an end to the $100 lunch rides. We even had our own 2400' grass strip.

These hospitals are going to need interpreters, you have Chinese and South Koreans on board hopefully there are people in the area who can help and assist with doing translation

That's exactly what could have happened here.
Sounds like the tip of the wing also hit the runway upon landing.
I wonder if the pilot was having trouble controling the plane or dealing with strong winds ?

Speaking of speculation.... how long will SFO be shut down as a result of this?

Can you imagine several hundred thousand pounds in lengths of hundreds of feet cartwheeling? Nuh-uh. There would be millions of little bitsy pieces and that’s about it.

Now KTVU reporting that nose may have been way high - poss attempting a go-around.

Cargo shift, fail to spool up, panic pull-up?

Yes, SF Gen said they are calling in Korean speakers. Police sending their Korean speakers to the airport.

Coming in from across the Pacific, the plane was probably low on fuel, and thus the fire was containable after the fire trucks arrived there fast.

I grew up in Winthrop, and as a kid, sailed in those waters that are now part of the runways. When I’ve gone back to Winthrop, I duck when those planes fly over!!

Well, it may well have been a “cartwheel” because it was partially off the ground for a little bit of the process as it turned sideways. In any case I’m sure it was quite spectacular to anyone that saw it, and the term “cartwheel” would probably be the first thing to pop into someone’s mind when thinking about a 175-foot-long, 200-ton airplane spinning sideways as it tried to land!

CNN or possibly FOX... Don’t know...In fact at least one possibly two wits used the word “cartwheeled”...

But this doesn’t appear to be the case at this point..

There a many fuel tanks on a plane like this.
In the wings, wing box or center of fuselage where wing and fuselage meet, and in some cases the tail of the plane on a 747.

Could be a recurring auto pilot failure with 777. Happened before with British airways.

That’s my guess...Pilot saw the seawall coming up fast, pulled the nose up as fast as possible resulting in the tail striking the seawall...

Just a guess....But the point of impact and debris path seems to support it.
