Currently just Tweets and locals talking about this, nothing on news sites yet. Lots of stuff in the Twitter feed, including links to uploaded videos of the smoking mess.
Could be, but a 777 came down short in London a few years ago. The engines stopped responding due to ice crystals in the fuel system.
Sooo...as I was traveling to the airport, listening to someone who thought discussing airplane crashes was appropriate since I’m a pilot, while I’m thinking of my exit row seating and smacking myself in the head for not wearing cross trainers, but thankful for remembering to wear cotton...well, thank you, universe- my also pilot husband just had me print out his ticket for his trip on a 777. I couldn’t understand why my daughter has to take anti-anxiety medication before flying. I’m a little dense. Regardless, they’ll determine it’s pilot error. I do have new respect for my husband as he told me about refusing a last minute run way change into Atlanta.
CNN showing UA885 now. They have towed it to a pad, and it seems to be surrounded by airport fire equipment. Did it get hit by something?
San Francisco International Airport ( SFO ) Public Information Officer just said there’s still no arrivals or departures from the airport. Couldn’t give out much else. Another briefing is scheduled in one hour at 3:00 PM PT.
KTVU talking about the NOTAMS now ... out for about a month - normal visual glideslope equip is inoperable due to construction. Pilots expected to eyeball it in. PAPPI - bank of lights - was out.
you called it
“KTVU talking about the NOTAMS now ... out for about a month - normal visual glideslope equip is inoperable due to construction. Pilots expected to eyeball it in. PAPPI - bank of lights - was out.”
And the accident cascade begins...
Pilots could have “built” their own glide slope, using the capabilities of the B777 FMC. ILS OTS meant that all pilots were basically flying “non-precision approaches” or, the “dreaded visual approach”. Could be a big factor, their reliance on technology and their inability to go back to basics.
That kind of engine disintegration would be catastrophic, but I have no experience in that area. Most likely that’s part of the fuselage which hit the jetty/runway and broke into debris. There’s pics/film of a large piece just in front of the jetty rocks... I just don’t see another engine anywhere, and I KNOW they have 2. Heh.
Is the PAPPI MOTAM’d as OOS?
Press conference tape playing now
I still haven’t seen any sign of that missing engine.
Wonder if it’s in the drink?
Sorry I’m late, I’ve been out playing. Now I’m getting e-mails from far away lands about it, and everybody individually must notify everybody on Fakebook about it, it’s just disappointing that everyone survived, isn’t it! The crowd wants blood and gore (pun intended, as the noise around it is thanks to Al’s invention.) Has there been a dozen threads on FR yet? There will be, there will be, just wait. Competing with the Zimmerman threads.
dunno but the guy on KTVU said it was out
Aw my baby.
Eye witness just said landing gear hit Burm!
Too low too soon!
Christ....
Girl on CNN says no one from SFO or Asiana has contacted the families.
THEY DON’T HAVE THAT INFO. Some people....
LOL! Didn’t know about this. I just came online. I’m so thankful everyone made it!
“They are not shear pin in the way most people understand the term”
Personally I have no clue. I’ll have to lean on the guy who used to build the plane, deliver the plane, work on Air Force One, and fly them.
