First if all, IncPen our checkpoints are not always in the same place.

To both IncPen and zingirl, at the checkpoints I'm talking about I have never been asked to produce a license, proof of insurance or registration. I've been asked “How are you doing tonight?” and “Have you been drinking?” I've even answered with I had a couple of drinks earlier in the day. And all I've gotten were “Thank you you can go.” I've seen people get asked the very same questions and then wonder why the officer gets mad when they spit on the guys badge, open their door and fall out of their car beer in hand. But that guy was mad and getting an attorney because his rights were violated. What about my rights? Drunk was two cars behind me and with no check point we could have had an accident.

Yep. Great example of a community dependent on government “moral compassion” that basically nourishes dependence, idleness, and promiscuity, then that same government tapping government-funded resources (the police) to police the crime they helped plant in crops. And never seeing the connection.

Yes. Harris co. is rough as all get out. My issue is they are too damn hypervigilent and everyones a suspect or potential threat so they go a bit over the top.

They've always reminded me of the checkpoints run by the Nazis you see in old world war II movies 'Your papers please'

I don't have to go back that far, they remind me of checkpoints in Eastern Europe, particularly East Germany, in the late 1970s and 1980s, a few of which I witnessed, and quite clearly, the people were scared of the officials.

I've also seen this in the 1990s and early 2000s in Central and South America, where the checkpoints function as a way to boost the salaries for the local cops - it's amazing how quickly you can get through a checkpoint if you have some cash or a nice item like a pair of binoculars or a radio or CD player that "accidentally" finds its way into the hands of whoever is in charge.

This once great country is being destroyed at both the national and local levels. Those cops in the video know damn well they are pissing all over the Constitution, but they keep on doing it. Un-patriotic sons of bitches, using a holiday that is supposed to remind us of why we despise their actions.

A couple years back we were in El Paso for my niece’s wedding. There were checkpoints setup on the streets each night I was there, and at different places. I suspect it was for the illegals, but not so sure. We were waved through each time.

They most likely were for illegals. I experience them around El Paso and elsewhere around the border occasionally. There was some talk of some officials wanting to expand them beyond the border, but the companies that rely on the illegals in Texas apparently threw some cash around to the politicians and it shut that talk down quickly.

If you won’t roll down your window at a DUI checkpoint you certainly appear to be hiding something or keeping odors of alcohol or other substances from leaving the vehicle. So I do not fault officers for going an extra step after he pulled that.

I fault the officers for being there in the first place. This is the wrong way for them to fulfull the motto "protect and serve." Random canvassing for criminals among regular joes going from point A to point B on a public roadway, is absolutly wrong on every count.

No healtcare unless you can pay cash. No housing without showing and verifying your green card. No access to schools without showing and verifying a green card. Everything else people talk about in regards to illegal immigrants is just stupid.

You don't even have to do that, you just start throwing a lot of management types of companies hiring illegals in prison, or shutting down said companies, and the jobs will dry up and they will go elsewhere. They are here because "American" companies hire them.

Here in Texas where I'm at, there is a reason why some of the largest donors to the higher political offices (such as Governor/Lt. Gov.) and some of the more important seats/position in the legislature are in the homebuilding and grocery business, and why support for guest worker programs was high.

I know a guy who was picked up 6 times at DWI checkpoints, has served time for DWI, has admitted it's all true, and now we see him walking around town drunk, because he doesn't have a ride. He's says he can't and won't stop drinking. I'm kind of glad for these checkpoints

You just proved they don't keep drunks off the streets, not if he was able to be picked up 5 more times.

They just finished setting up a big checkpoint across the street from my house (Santa Monica blvd in Los Angeles). They had one there Thanksgiving weekend too.

With all respect...I just disagree. We are seeing our local law enforcement being militarized. Tactics are becoming very aggressive.

More and more we witness officers crossing the boundaries of good and decency to heavy handed oppressive sorta stuff.

Violating the rights of the majority in hopes to snag a small minority degrades liberty and robs us of freedom.

Sorry, deal with the animals as you will, but law abiding citizens need not be treated as criminals.

Many hundreds, perhaps thousands over the years have been stopped at checkpoints. I pointed to the carnage of just two that got through.

Ah. You mean the folks stopped and caught for being boozed-up at those checkpoints all represent truly drunk drivers? GREAT HONK you are a sucker.

Pal, just one drunk-driving charge for being over the limit, which in real world means being able perfectly to drive after limiting your evening to three glasses of wine, can destroy the professional careers of pilots, nurses, doctors -- and the worse thing is that a reading from a machine ultimately gages the person's ability to drive or not. So you can wash out about 99 percent of those "many hundreds, perhaps thousands over the years" as being regular, safe-driving folks who'd underestimatd how little booze it takes to go over the machine's number, and WHAM, your willy is wacked.

If cops actually could only watch for drunk drivers as by how they drove, they'd catch more real ones.

You know your statement makes no sense. A checkpoint takes the drunk driver off the road and charges him for that offense.

Do you want to give the Police power to follow this guy 24/7 for a DWI? Because if you don’t, which I don’t, you can’t stop him from drinking and getting into a car again. But without those five checkpoint arrests he could have killed 5 times.

He has now served time and has no license. But you can’t stop him from hopping into a borrowed car and driving drunk again.

WTH? “Just one drunk driving charge can ruin your career”. Yeah, because just one drunk driving incident can KILL. You sound like someone who thinks you’re perfectly fine driving over the limit. You even say that doesn’t make you drunk. Yes it does! If you say you could get a DWI for your three glasses of wine then don’t drive after three glasses of wine! Have two! Wait a while. Have ten, have someone else drive. Not rocket science.
