Live Thread: Egypt Revolution 2.0

The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.

A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:

Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were “unacceptable.”

The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypt’s first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the country’s problems.

It goes on to say this... calling for foreign intervention against him. So "intentional misleading?"

Absolutely!

The MB will start killing people. The army is clashing with them now in different parts of the country, as I heard few minutes ago.

The coverage in FOX is totally ignorant. They say the MB will win the next election and presidency! LOL!

They say the MB is the most organized faction in the country (true till yesterday morning) until their leaders are being arrested in airports or put under house arrest.

That was #1...#2 the MB and Islamist parties will be outlawed as they should.

The opposition is united on one issue at least:

READ MY LIPS, NO POLITICAL ISLAM, EVER! And, they ain’t Bush I.

“This was too easy. Have this nagging feeling that there is more to come.”

Leave it to you to express a collective existential thought...

Me as well, but I refuse to entertain today! Pushing it aside for now, but of course I’m obviously not.

One can never enjoy a victory these days. I imagine it is like that in physical warfare as well. It’s never over til it’s over, and even then, it still might not be over.

The first couple statements out of the BHO adm/DNC will be an indication of what is taking place in the subterranean depths of
“diplomacy,” as they seek to take control of the “narrative” and prop up some arm of the MB.

Have you noticed that talking point already -— moderate MB opposed to Morsi that deserve a voice in the new government?

Egypt Army Chief announces ouster of Morsi as Egyptian president

The Australian
July 4, 2013
CAIRO: EGYPT'S army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ousted president Mohamed Morsi and declared the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court caretaker leader.

Mr Sisi, the defence minister in Mr Morsi's government, also announced a freezing of the Islamist-drafted constitution and early presidential elections.

He said a "strong and capable" government would be formed and would have "full capacities".

The army chief said a panel would be formed to look into amendments to the constitution and a law would be drafted to regulate parliamentary elections.

After the announcement, delivered by Mr Sisi in a televised address, Mr Morsi denounced the move as an "illegal" and urged Egyptians to "peacefully resist the coup as he himself will do", a senior aide told AFP.

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said the roadmap announced by Mr Sisi "meets the the people's demands for early presidential elections".

The army's dramatic move comes after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to call for his ouster, accusing him of betraying the 2011 revolution that brought him to power.

Egypt: U.S. State Department Orders Some Embassy Personnel To Leave Country
July 3, 2013 | 2133 GMT
The U.S. State Department has ordered non-essential U.S. diplomats and the families of all personnel at the U.S. Embassy to leave Egypt in anticipation of violence following the military’s removal of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in a coup July 3, an unnamed U.S. official said, AP reported. Larger regional issues have taken priority over Egypt’s political morass in the eyes of the United States and its Western allies, who have grown weary of intervening in the Middle East.

Fox (The Five) reports that there are already clashes between the military and pro-Morsi MB factions throughout Egypt.

Fox Reporter (didn’t get reporter name - Connor Powell?): “The MB is angry here and they will be heard from here in the next few days or so.”

Sadat once ordered bearded people loitering downtown Cairo to be arrested, their beards shaved, their heads shaved for good measure and released. They said they vanished in two days...true story. No wonder they assassinated him, may God bless his soul.

Machiavelli said "Do not do your enemy a small injury", by which he meant "Do not do something to an enemy which just pisses him off, without reducing his ability or willingness to retaliate". The Greeks also warned against going out of your way to humiliate an enemy.

Me, I would have "disappeared" the Islamist leadership.
