The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.
A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:
Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were unacceptable.
The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.
In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypts first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the countrys problems.

Unless there is some sort of last-minute deal struck with less hardline islamist elements.

CAIRO - Egypts state-run Al-Ahram newspaper said it expected President Mohamed Morsi would either step down or be removed from office on Wednesday when a deadline set by the army for resolving the countrys political crisis expires.
Egypts flagship state daily said an army road map for the future would set up a three-member presidential council to be chaired by the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
Opposition: Morsis speech equivalent to civil war call; 16 dead in Cairo U. clashesAl-Ahram learnt that with the end of the 48-hour period set by the armed forces ... it is expected in the hours that follow it, one of two things: either Morsi announces his resignation himself, or the declaration of his removal through the road map for the future set out by the armed forces, it said.
Al-Ahram said the road map would set up a neutral transitional government to be headed by a military leader. The transitional period would last nine to 12 months in which a new constitution would be drafted to set out a path to presidential elections.
Egypts army commander and Morsi, who represents the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, each pledged his life to defy the other as the hour approached on Wednesday that will trigger a military takeover that was prompted by mass demonstrations.
The military chiefs issued a call to battle in a statement headlined The Final Hours. They said they were willing to shed blood against terrorists and fools after Morsi refused to give up his elected office. Morsi said, The price ... is my life.
As a mass of revelers on Cairos Tahrir Square feted the army for saving the revolutionary democracy won there two years ago, supporters of the presidents Muslim Brotherhood denounced a military coup. Some clashed with security forces at Cairo University, where 16 people died and about 200 were wounded.
Morsi cannot help but see it, and once the APCs, IFVs, and tanks start moving into position, he would be a fool not to "make a deal."
We shall see.

I would say yes and that is why Obama is now trying to get him killed. Don't kid yourself, these "demonstrations" or "protests" are not merely to get Morsi out of office, they are to get him to a place where he can be killed. Why? Because he, like Ambassador Stevens knows where the bodies are buried and, again, like Stevens, he has served his purpose. He, like Ambassador Stevens can be replaced.
That’s the penultimate insult. The ultimate insult is throwing the shoes. Those guys are seriously hacked off ...
ROTFLOL! Thanks for the correction. I can only imagine though the Egyptian generals said, “Thanks for the F-16’s and the M1’s, We already got a use for them!”
Obama Offers a Revisionist History of His Administrations Approach to Egypt

Despite its claims now, the Obama administration has done little to press Morsis administration to support human rights. Josh Rogin and Eli Lake report.

That definitely was a travesty! From what I understand there was some sort of agreement made in the 7th century when Egypt went Muslim (Alexandria was one of the origial Christian Patriarchates)to not destroy the pyramids. If I recall correctly, something similiar to what happened to the monastery Mohammed took refuge in, in Saudi Arabia. But then these are Muslims we’re talking about.

Obama’s Crisis of Competence
The White House seems more comfortable stage-managing the news than dealing with the uncomfortable crises that inevitably crop up.
US media is in a virtual blackout on all of this.
*******
The media has had plenty of practice at this over the past five years. Ignore anything that conflicts with their agenda.
I think there’s something else...Freedom.
Same thing will happen in Turkey and Syria..
Once people have had a taste of the good life...and freedom...you take that away and there will be rebellion.
Same here. All Americans have had the taste of the good life all our lives...we sense a foreboding under Obama..esp with respect to what he’s done thru the IRS, EPA etc.
There will be a huge backlash coming...

Exactly! What does it say that the Kenyan’s foreign policy of supporting the MB is on the verge of being overthrown less than 2 years after it was installed?
Thanks for the pings, GF! Reading even if not posting much these days!
Egypt is a huge foreign policy disaster for Obama. There is no other way to frame it. (Unless you are the delusional @$$ kissing Juan Williams.)
I look at the live cameras of Egypt’s massive protests, and can’t help but think about tomorrow where the US national media will effectively take the day off, while independence is fought for in Egypt.
Personally, I think it will be mostly over before the fireworks go off across the street from my house. And judging by how quickly rats are abandoning ship there, that the place not to be would be at Morsi’s side.
The Egyptians and Israelis aren’t even looking over their shoulders to see what Obama thinks or wants them to do. They know that he is an empty suit not to be relied on for anything.
**********
Sad that Egyptians know this but most of America doesn’t.
If it is true that there were 14 million people protesting throughout the country is the past few days..............then it is a revolution.
