Live Thread: Egypt Revolution 2.0
Various sources | Wednesday, July 3, 2013 | Kristinn

The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.

A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:

Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were “unacceptable.”

The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypt’s first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the country’s problems.

Obama must be crapping himself because the army will be getting to see exactly what the MB has been up to with Obama…..this might be interesting.

Based on my personal experience, I suspect that the US military is working with the Egyptian military on the transition process. The Egyptian military remains Egypt's most trusted and least corrupt institution.

There will have to be some face saving measures for Morsi in order to avoid a civil war. No doubt there are frantic behind the scenes negotiations. The military will move cautiously. The best solution would be for Morsi to call for early elections. That would go a long way to defuse the situation. That said, the MB will not give up power easily. The MB was banned under Mubarak.

And of course, the US must have relations with the democratically elected government of Egypt. Anne Patterson is our Ambassador to Egypt, which means she is the President's personal representative. She is just following directions from the WH and NSC. I know her personally and she is a top notch diplomat whose integrity is impeccable.

I find it interesting the military decided it was necessary or even desirable to launch this coup. They must really have been under threat from the MB.

Just wondering, is US TV covering this? I remember all they could cover was the fall of Mubabrak. I didn’t see any newspaper headlines on this, either.

Doesn’t fit their narrative, didn’t happen.

“Have you checked any Israeli media...one would assume they have pretty good sources...”

“Egypt’s army has ordered that Mohamed Morsi and senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood are forbidden from leaving the country, a Egyptian security official said.

According to the report, the army directive was released as part of an investigation into a prison break during the 2011 riots against President Hosni Mubarak, during which Mohamed Morsi, among others, escaped jail.”
