The lone survivor on an elite Arizona firefighting crew was serving as a lookout and relaying key information to his colleagues when a raging wildfire trapped and killed them, officials said Tuesday.
Brendan McDonough, 21, was in his third season with the 20-member, Prescott-based Granite Mountain Hotshots.
He was assigned to be a "heads-up on the hillside" for the team on that fateful afternoon two days ago, said Wade Ward, a Prescott Fire Department spokesman who relayed McDonough's story at an afternoon news conference.
Ward said McDonough "did exactly what he was supposed to" when conditions changed as his team fought a mountain blaze near the town of Yarnell, about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix.

I hope the media will back off.
And the biggest enviros all have redwood decks but not for you little man !
He will be the 20th victim. Either guilt or pressure will kill him.
It’s not going to be easy for him.
Being a survivor, much less sole survivor, of a close knit crew like that will be with Mr. McDonough for life. I pray he has the faith and support he will surely need.
Almighty Father, I ask you bring peace to this man, the realization that he did what he could, the calm of spirit which allows him to endure any unfounded attack, from within or without, and soothe the pain of the loss of his brethren. I ask this in the Name of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen.
Well in this case the fire wasn’t on federal land, and it was in brush/scrubland, not forest. There’s no way to “manage” that stuff. It grows too fast to keep cleared.
In His Name.....Amen
And Amen.
Amen! I hope he finds his way out of the dark valley of trauma.
Amen.
Sole survivor.
One of the jobs of the lookout is to observe and report on the weather... my niece fought fires in WA., and had her turn pulling lookout duties. Her charge, was ultimately the crew’s well being. She was proud of reaching this position in her career, and deeply aware of the enormous responsibility that fell on her shoulders. Our conversation was one that gave me pause and went into the memory bank for lifetime recall.
Indeed. You know he has to be suffering greatly.
Amen! I borrowed your fine words to join the chorus of prayers.
I hope the media will back off.
The media are jackals. They will try everything to get to this guy. I feel so sorry for him. May his heart achieve some peace sooner than later.
Jackals, and GHOULS
I join your prayer, Amen
