House Republicans insisted Sunday that they plan to change key elements of the Senate-passed immigration bill, signaling a protracted and rocky battle ahead despite one Democrat's pronouncement that in the end the House will cave and pass the Senate bill anyway.
Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee who is playing a major role in the chamber's consideration of immigration policy, on Sunday addressed what is perhaps at the heart of the impasse. He said the House, which is drafting its own plan, cannot agree to a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Rather, he wants a "pathway to legalization" -- in other words, allow some illegal immigrants a shot at a green card, but not full-fledged citizenship.
The pathway to citizenship, though, is a cornerstone of the Senate-passed bill, and any Democrat-backed plan. Increased border security, better enforcement of businesses and an expansion of the legal immigration system make up the rest of the bill.

They are going to pass it. They’ll get a few meaningless changes in and claim they saved us.
How many does this have to happen before people figure it out?
Former Rep. Tom Tancredo can see it coming: Even if the House passes a perfectly conservative bill to reform the nation’s immigration system, the Senate Gang of Eight will water it down in a conference committee and leave Republicans little choice but to get rolled and vote for a bill they don’t like(amnesty)

call congress . no bill at all from the House
I’m sorry my FRiend. I love Tom, he’s a great guy, even away from politics. And he’s right.
The problem is, the Republican establishment thinks they must pass something, and they will. And it will be very bad, since Democrats will have most of the input on the bill.
Yes it’s a trick. Even many freepers don’t understand this trick that Tom Tancredo and Michelle Bachman are warning about . I’ve tried to explain it. The only thing the House should do is ignore the Senate bill. do not pass anything at all in the House. they don’t have to. if they pass anything then the senate will merge that bill with the Senate Amnesty bill and then Amnesty passes.
Washington, DC, where the Democrats propose to tear down the Washington Monument, and the Republicans respond with a sensible plan to do it in three easy stages. Never fails.
Again, why do we need to “replace” it?? ENFORCE the laws we have now!!!
They don't wanna become Americans! They just want some extra money from doin dirty work that Ameicans are simply too lazy and too proud to do!!! They have no love for this country!!!
They're amazed that these decent jobs that pay fairly well are even open to them!!! They neither want, or need US citizenship. It's just the Democrats that want to cheapen citizenship into nothing but serfdom!!!
And we're letting it happen because we won't teach our kids to work in a dairy farm full time in the summer and part time the rest of the year to help pay for their over-priced education ( and that's another sad tale of woe!)!!!
I hear ya.
There cannot be any Bill put out by the House, the Senate will quickly rewrite it.
Yes, Deaf and Dumb!
“KILL THE BILL!!”
Absolutely. And while they are at it, it would be good if they would also kill the BULL!
(sigh)
What is wrong with American politicians that bills that should NEVER see the light of day come out of the senate as flawed as they can get and, despite the fact that the senate's bill is unpopular, the house is going to "fix it" and give us something that no one wants.
Or, the flawed bill comes out of the house and goes to the senate and the senate "fixes it" and gives us something no one wants. Just because somebody's staffers wrote up a bill doesn't mean it has any merit and the American people need to be burdened with it.
The fact is that the Politburo (Congress) is treating American citizenship as a prize won on a TV reality show. Studies have proven that when something is given away to another, the value the recipient places on that item reflects what they paid for it. IOW, something we get for free has no value.
IMO, politicians who want to give American citizenship away to those who don't respect it, don't want it and didn't earn it should lose their citizenship! Perhaps then they will understand the value of what they are giving away!
“Schmuckie Schumer was so smug and self-righteous on Fox earlier today-—warning Boehner Repubs they will be a minority party forever if they dont vote for reform.”
You have to admit though, Liz, that it is heart warming that Schmuckie is concerned enough about Republicans to show them what they have to do to be more competitive. That’s a very selfless act for a hardened Stalinist commie.
“Change it?” KILL THE DAMN THING, you traitors, and do your Constitutional duty and secure the border!
Freedom Party coming right up, and boy, am I ready....
Or what, we're going to stick our tongues out at them? We'll say something mean about them behind their backs?
In Brazil, poor people are rioting over the money Brazil has spent to host the olympics. Across the Middle East, people rioted and had civil wars over politicians that never leave. In some parts of the world, freedom and liberty still mean something. In the 1980s, one young man in Tienanmen Square in China had the courage to face down a tank.
But, NOT in America. We have become too apathetic to get off our butts and fight for the country we claim to love. Were too sure that we can fix the ills of our country at the next election by re-electing the same people who created the problems. We cant be bothered to go into the streets en masse and tell the politicians that amnesty for illegal invaders is anathema to American citizens; that Fast & Furious is not ok; that Benghazi was murder committed at the highest levels and someone needs to be held accountable; that spying on American citizens in clear violation of the 4th Amendment is an outrage that needs to be addressed; that holding America hostage to the oppressive and tyrannical demands of a fraudulent leader who wants to deprive us of a major source of electrical power by banning coal-fired power plants is not the direction America wants or needs to take; that dismantling the military to pretend that our multi-trillion dollar deficit is getting better not worse is the worst kind of fraud.
Yeah, doing something to stand up for America and opposing the direction into which we are being dragged is just too much work; let someone else do it because we have to work even though the new immigration bill passed by the Senate penalizes employers $5000 for hiring American citizens to do the job an illegal should have.
If we start now, we may make it through every national cemetary apologizing to the veterans who gave their lives fighting just so we could come to this point in our history!
Just as it was with Romney and his "repeal and replace" Obamacare. Weasel words.
Exactly!
They need to just do nothing. Or pass an immigration bill that enforces the current laws period.
If you're sufficiently angry to get up and DO something about what's happening to our country, there's a patriotic protest movement called Overpasses for Obama's Impeachment springing up all across the country.
Grab a bunch of like minded friends and head to any overpass with your flags, signs, and banners, and let the thousands passing below you, know what you think. Folks are banding together to do this in every major city as we speak.
