If ever I thought myself objective and unbiased, the George Zimmerman trial is definitely not that moment.
So let's cut to the chase. Any attorney, jury member, judge or white person in that courtroom is not going to understand Rachel Jeantel. And I don't expect them to.
In fact, I certainly, like my fellow writer Rachel Samara, understand why white people wouldn't like Rachel.
She's hard. She's black. And your assumptions about her background and lack of education make you feel like you are better, somehow. That her testimony, no matter how powerful and impactful it may be to this trial, is implausible. Weak, maybe? Let's impeach her.
But maybe the reason white people don't understand Rachel Jeantel has something more to do with white privilege then, what they would call, Rachel's capricious nature.
Let's for one second try to understand why Rachel is "angry" (read emotional), "hood" (read blunt), and "unintelligent" (read multilingual).
The thing is, what white people see in Rachel has little to do about her own issues, and more to say about the America that white people are blind to. Let's take her testimony on not calling the police, for example.

I take some objection here, I don’t see both sides being bitter towards one another, I see ONE side constantly flaying around trying to blame whitey for everything in their life.
I had no real opinions about blacks in general, and still don’t by and large. This division has surfaced at a rapid speed in the last 5 years due to obama saying the ‘cop acting stupidly’ all the way to the black panther voter gig and it’s picked up speed from there.
I guess my point is simply that I hadn’t heard, nor do I now, whites going around pointing fingers at blacks and yelling racism.
Though I didn’t write “dumb”. I wrote “stupid” and meant it.
White Priviledge= Raised by 2 parents, one or both had jobs, neither had a criminal record, parents taught you the value of hard work and education, and taught you how to behave in public.
So, Chris, we cover her a*s and give her a pass.......cause she is black. Ignore her lies and hate spewing out bursts and forget the fact that a man’s entire future rest on the facts being presented in this trial.
Obama and the media and all the usual suspects have did everything in their power to railroad Simmons and turn the trial into a lynch mob scenario. Thanks to all the race baiting by so many high profile jackasses, the defendant is being threatened with death by violent dimwits even if he is proven to be innocent.
So much for justice for any “privileged ?” white person on trial for using lethal force against a “underprivileged?” black resident of a fancy gated community who is in the process of beating him to death.
I stopped reading after “unintelligent” (read multilingual).
But, it reinforces my belief that we cannot live in the same society as people of this culture, regardless of color.
You are correct. The comments reflect the White Oppressor-People of Color Victim narrative that generations of Americans have now been fed in school, in the media, and in neraly every facet of their life. Of course blacks readily accept this message because it provides a convenient excuse for their communities failures and pathologies. What's sad is how many of the comments under the article are from white women who are easily swayed by emotional rhetoric.
“Choices” all (made by the parents)...nothing to do with race.

The “companion” article “What white people don’t understand about Rachel Jeantel” is just as insipid.
These”People”can NEVER get beyond the”Melatonin Issue”!Let’s just cut to the chase and call Rachael for what she is;A LIAR!!And(belive it or not)LIARS come in ALL Sizes and Colors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This article says I see her as inferior because of my race and makes every excuse why due to that old racism I do not recognize how she is a gift to society. I'm sorry this woman couldn't get or hold even the most menial job and as an employer I would far rather hire a foreign worker with no skills and limited English because they would do a better job and not have their race used as a constant excuse.
I agree. Environment is very important. If you take identical twins, raise one in a healthy family and let the other run wild in the street, one will be a more productive citizen than the other.
People who embrace the “Protestant Work Ethic” tend to be successful. It is true that “whites” originated the phrase, but look at at any successful non-white immigrant and you will find that they embody and practice the tenants of the “Protestant Work Ethic”, even when they don't even know what the term means.
People who are not successful, in the majority, do not embrace the “Protestant Work Ethic”, and this even includes “white folk”.
The formula for success is out there, it's not a mystery or a secret. All you have to do is use it. Whether you choose to do so, or not do so, is on you.
When the race card is thrown at me, my reply is: “The real question is why such a high percentage of the black population is embracing a culture that leads to poverty and self-destruction?”
I have friends of many colors and cultures...none of them are thugs.
I know thugs of many colors and cultures...none of them are my friends.
White privilege is the right to raise yourself up from poverty through hard work and education only to have much of the product of your work forcefully taken by government so that it can buy the votes of the lazy, inbred, degenerates that government houses on its ever growing plantation.
I think you’re right.
What difference would that make. She illiterate (to use her vernacular)
But maybe the reason white people don’t understand Rachel Jeantel has something more to do with white privilege then, what they would call, Rachel’s capricious nature.
