U.S. charges Snowden with espionage
WaPo ^ | 6/21/13 | Peter Finn and Sari Horwitz

Federal prosecutors have filed a sealed criminal complaint against Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked a trove of documents about top-secret surveillance programs, and the United States has asked Hong Kong to detain him on a provisional arrest warrant, according to U.S. officials.

Snowden was charged with espionage, theft and conversion of government property, the officials said.

The complaint was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, a jurisdiction where Snowden’s former employer, Booz Allen Hamilton, is headquartered, and a district with a long track record in prosecuting cases with national security implications.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Snowden flew to Hong Kong last month after leaving his job at an NSA facility in Hawaii with a collection of highly classified documents that he acquired while working at the agency as a systems analyst.

The documents, some of which have been published in The Washington Post and Britain’s Guardian newspaper, detailed some of the most secret surveillance operations undertaken by the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as classified legal memos and court orders underpinning the programs in the United States.

The 29-year-old intelligence analyst revealed himself June 9 as the leaker in an interview with the Guardian and said he went to Hong Kong because it provided him the “cultural and legal framework to allow me to work without being immediately detained.”

Snowden subsequently disappeared from public view; it is thought that he is still in the Chinese territory. Hong Kong has its own legislative and legal systems but ultimately answers to Beijing, under the so-called “one country, two systems” arrangement.

“That ain’t gonna happen. The Republicans hate Snowden just as much as the Democrats do.”

People like you and me have to plant the seed that traitors will be punished for violating their oath and stealing our liberty. If not us, who?

Exactly and all of us who are veterans swore an oath to defend the Constitution from enemies, both foreign and domestic! As has happened again and again during the course of human history, the government has become the enemy of the very citizens it's supposed to serve! Stop this spying of the American people, end the Fed and abolish the IRS and income tax! Starve the beast!

“He was in a position where he could have brought down Obama if he played his cards right, could have gathered evidence linking him to so many things: “

Not over yet.

It’s not over yet, but do you get the feeling FNC was told to shut up? What if the Guardian buckles? Who would take the story up?

Is also called the system feeding on those who support the system with tax dollars and votes. Long ago came to the realization the system was the system was the system and the system was designed to be able to do whatever the system decided it wanted to do in any given situation with more safeguards built in than fanny has butts. Have heard too many times from those in the power structure that the taxpayers are only ... taxpayers and voters; and not the government. Those who occupy the halls of congress, the white house and the supreme court believe they are the government; the entire government. That thing of the people being the government, as is in the Constitution, well forget about it. Those who occupy the halls of congress, the white house and the supreme court believe they are the government, all of it, and they have the ability to do whatever they wish to do; taxpayers and voters be off to hades. Don’t believe me? Hey ... ask those in the halls of congress, the white house and the supreme court. States be danged. The people be danged. Be certain to vote for your favorite tyrant.

There is a reason that the story broke outside the country. If this guy was wise - a big assumption - he has things in a hidden place that are accessible by reporters in the advent he is “disappeared”.

With the vast interwebs and dark web, I imagine there are opportunities to easily copy the info to numerous locations.

I’ve come to believe, until additional evidence contradicts this, that the government is mostly mad that citizens now know their Constitutional Rights have been corrupted.

As a layman citizen, it appears the government approach to terrorism is the equivalent to burning down the whole house because you spotted 12 mice...

I’m somewhat expecting some new stuff from Snowden today; I hope he continues in the Q&A format he used last weekend.

Why shouldn’t someone (Panetta?/Obama) be charged with leaking info that got Seal Team Six members murdered and got the Pakistani doc who helped get binladen jailed? That info was no less treasonous.

Very good point!

The Republicans hate Snowden just as much as the Democrats do.

And that's exactly why we the people should be concerned and support Mr. Snowden!

If Hong Kong extradites Snowden to the US it makes China look like wimps as if they fear the wrath of Obummer. Many say Beijing is too limp-wristed right now. So we’ll see if that’s true if they hand over Snowden.

"I still want to know why they hired this person with so little education. I know some people here excuse it because he was a computer nerd but I know many computer experts who’d have loved that job"

Was that intended to be ironic humor? I've watched quite a few of the more highly credentialed "experts" reinstall images on their corporations' hard drives daily to overwrite viruses. There are also many credentialed sysadmins from Iran, China and the like. Can't get a capable admin for secure systems from a university program alone and certainly not from a well known "IT" corporation (been in many of them, laughed at that).

Yep. To do so, China would be cao-tao-ing to the lords of the West and sinking back into its Opium Wars mentality.

;-D

(Metmom Sidenote: Pinged you for information in this reply post references our previous conversation about “control” of technology....in the subculture. etc.)

It’s not beyond believable Snowden is “Wikileaks” (Assange) man of the hour”.

Assange has been “imprisoned” basically in the the Ecudor Embassy for almost a year now. He can’t function! His communications with the outside world and his people very limited as Assange will not communicate unless in person..... if he leaves there he’ll be arrrested immediately.

So He’s unable to do or influence nation states as he was prior....

Assange could have easily found Snowden aggreable to steal the documents he did..and go to the news...then in Assange comes as the hero of the hour to wisk Snowden away to Iceland...with His Wikileaks Businessman in charge of Snowden.

Assange wants the Documents Snowden has to garner the following that has dropped from Wikileaks....and it’s a great headline for he and his company....

Assange has stated that he cannot gain the popularity Wikileaks enjoys unless he’s got the attention on a world wide scale....nor can he maintain the momentum of revenues he desires to carry out his long term goals....

He has an agenda which includes a subculture of Internet Operators with ambitions to “control” the flow of information and affect International Leaders decisions amongst one another on an International scale.....and he has done so in the past throughout nations....which is why they are more than willing to spend the money to keep him isolated.

An Example of what he has done....”Egypt” comes to mind where he orchestrated an underground communication link for the Rebels so they could operate thus bypassing the Gov. shutdown of cellphone usuage. Thus the so called Rebels would not be at a disadvantage....which now we know Egypt is run by the Muslim Brotherhood.

HE’s also affected uprising in S. Africa and other nations....so he believes himself a player in the decisions among country leaders.

Were he to have Snowdens Documents he could certainly lay them out there in a timely fashion...as he has already done with Snowdens documents...so they affect International meetings...as with China and O , G-8 Summit etc.....and that Is his style and the exact style Snowden supposedly is using.

The Businessman, who is willing to transport Snowden to Iceland, is directly affiliated with Wikileaks...as is the money to finance the trip.

Assange knows he has center stage once more..and enough pressure to affect what’s happening Internationally ....Snowden is his “puppet”.

As I’ve already posted - it’s a government job with rules and regulations on the hiring process. It falls on a pay-scale - this guy made over a hundred thousand - he would need high level degree(s). I understand rules can be bent but not in a unionized job.

Bottomline: How did he get this very lucrative job? Is there a back-door route to some of these jobs and if so do they undergo a security check?

I’ve been reading quite a bit about this Wikileaks guy...He actually had a meeting with google and other officials from Washington before he was on the run....Reading the transcript was an eyeopener...

On the 23 of June, 2011 a secret five hour meeting took place between WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, who was under house arrest in rural UK at the time and Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Also in attendance was:

* Jared Cohen,... a former Secretary of State advisor to Hillary Clinton,
* Scott Malcomson,.... Director of Speechwriting for Ambassador Susan Rice at the US State Department
* Lisa Shields,...... Vice President of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Schmidt and Cohen requested the meeting, they said, to discuss ideas for “The New Digital World”, their forthcoming book to be published on April 23, 2013.

We provide here a verbatim transcript of the majority of the meeting; a close reading, particularly of the latter half, is revealing.

(You can download the recording.)
