A highlight of the reunion was the Confederate Veterans walk on the path of Gen. George Picketts charge that was greeted, this time, by a handshake from the Union Veterans.

Hood burned Atlanta first and did more damage than Sherman. Hood was indiscriminate, burning his ammunition train, and when it blew up, letting the large number of fires so started continue and spread.
Sherman burned specific buildings that would be of use to the rebel government.
Many lost causers choose to forget about the damage Hood was responsible for, or even blame Sherman for Hood’s damage.
And they respected one another

Damn
Looks like my 10 year old
Except in 1860 there was no oppressive central government from which to secede.
Washington, Hancock, Adams, Jefferson, were all faced with the fact that Britain had occupied Boston, and were starving the people there as their response to the Tea Party.
The government of Britain had begun the war, sending parties of soldiers in battalion strength in an attempt to capture citizens and steal colonial arms that were never the property of the English government.
There is no correspondence between 1860 and 1775. If you think there is, I can only recommend that you do some research.
Controversies between the states, or between the states and the federal government are to be resolved with the supreme court as original jurisdiction, per Article 3 of the Constitution.
The slave states did not write up their grievances, file a court case seeking legal resolution, as would be constitutional, nor did they introduce a bill into congress, nor did they try to have the congress submit an amendment to the constitution. Any of those approaches would have been legal. They tried none of them.
I think the clear thinking GOP in the north...not the radicals.....
Figured making peace with the South was easier and less costly than subjugation
And the men who had actually fought in the war had no more stomach for it
Unlike the radicals who had endured the war at home
The Union commanders gave good terms in my view
Unlike the typical freeper of the NeoYankee brigade who I have seen occasion claim all slaveholding families in the South should have been hanged to a man woman or child and compare our ancestors to Nazis
Its not really about the history then its about something personal now
My recollection is that the southern veterans provided a tent for the use of the ‘black confederates’.
To be fair, the southern soldiers were far more conscripted than the northern soldiers.
It wasn’t so much that the southern soldiers were supporting slavery, as they were victims of the slave system.
In particular, the opening of new land was backbreaking labor, but could lead to very large profits in a few years. The south depended on slavery to do that, and slaves were rented for that purpose.
The R.E. Lee family plantation produced slaves to be sold or rented out, and the very large profits from developing new land would be shared with the slave owner either through rental fees or through high prices for prime slaves.
That was not the method used in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana. Lincoln described the method there well. A man would work for others for a year or two, save his money, and would buy some land or a business, then work for himself, and after that would hire others to work for him.
Lincoln was also the first US president to have a patent on an invention, so he was aware of another approach to make money.
Well, there is GeorgiaGirl2....
We went through that before. The city had been occupied by the US, and reoccupied by the south. After being retaken, the buildings used by the south when they reoccupied were burned. Still, rather a lot of buildings did survive.
Sherman was brilliant, and fought a generous and magnanimous campaign. Hood was brash, rash, and trash, and did more damage to the confederate states than ever he did to the north. Yet you condemn Sherman and never do I hear a word of criticism from you of Hood.
That picture was John Lincoln Clem, ‘the drummer boy of Shiloh’ who ended his career as a Major General in 1916, the last Civil War veteran on active service.
You sound like a rapist.
Many lost causers choose to forget about the damage Hood was responsible for, or even blame Sherman for Hoods damage.
You’re right.
Wrong side:
"The men have behaved themselves the best I saw them either home or abroad. Every man has seemed to be on his good behavior since we entered Atlanta. The women have been dressed up waiting for our men to commence raping but they have waited in vain. There has not been a single outrage commited in this city, a circumstance that the people say they cannot say for the rebel army." -- William Dunn, Union Army surgeon, letter to his wife on September 27, 1864 "
Four years shooting at each other was enough for them.

With comments like that, you get the degree of respect you deserve.
That was a well-written piece. Thanks. The only thing that I would add was that both sides completely misjudged the duration and intensity of the war and hence their respective manpower requirements. It shows in the length of service periods they chose (and later had to amend).
Not trying to hijack the thread here, but I just went out to Amazon to look for a book a friend recommended (WWII) and the first two books that popped up in the advert section were Last Chance for Victory and Lost Triumph.
Considering that I hadn’t actually looked for either book on Amazon, it shows how stuff we all write here gets caught up in the great internet tracking matrix ...
Well if they’re gonna pay that close attention I guess I had better make sure I’m sporting fresh skivvies when cruzin on the Intarwebs ;-)
