Gaza needs to bring back public hangings, senior court official Khaled el-Batash argued this week in an interview with the local media outlet Filistine.
Batash said courts should have their own police, who would implement court rulings by publicly executing condemned criminals.
Public executions would serve to deter Gaza residents from serious crime, he argued.
Hamas has instituted the death penalty for several crimes, among them murder, rape, drug dealing, and “collaborating” with Israel, a charge applied to those who provide information on terrorist activity that is used to assassinate terrorists or otherwise thwart attacks.

I have pondered the use of public hangings for capital crimes as a deterrent. I think it would have a profound impact.

Don't think so? Human nature does not change. In the "past" before we got "civilized" the whole town turned out for hangings w/ food and souvenir vendors. The same in pre "civilized" Europe,& now in the ME & wherever public executions are held.

Actually, this may be good in the long run.
To start with, most who are hung will be typical criminals. That some of these criminals are connected with Paleo gangs in competition with Hamas is amusing, because it will start blood feuds. However, it may inspire other Arabs in the region to start hanging problems as well.
Importantly, this will also create a big stir in Israel, because a lot of Israelis are strongly opposed to the death penalty for anyone, but when other Israelis seeing nasty criminals being put down like dogs in Gaza, they are going to start asking questions.
Like, “We arrest Gazans for things Hamas would hang them for. Maybe we should instead turn them over for hanging instead of paying a fortune to keep them in prison.”
Or, “Maybe Israel should start hanging murderers as well.”
Public hangings for public officials who abuse their positions is an idea whose time has come.
