Every Assistant Principal In Philadelphia Is Getting Laid Off Today

Philadelphia schools are suffering the latest casualties in the ongoing education crisis in the U.S.

ABC 6 News in Philadelphia is reporting that all 160 assistant principals in the city's school district will lose their jobs as part of thousands of layoffs that will go into effect at the end of the month.

The Philadelphia School District is trying to close a $304 million budget gap. Art, music, and athletic programs will be hit hard by what some are calling the "Doomsday Budget."

Chicago is another big city that is turning to drastic cuts amid a budget crisis.

The city's school district is closing 49 elementary schools this summer, and the teachers union says the district might institute thousands of teacher layoffs to reduce spending. Chicago Public Schools is facing a $1 billion budget deficit.

Public schools across the country have been laying off tens of thousands of employees amid state budget shortfalls. In December, 11,000 of the 13,000 local government jobs lost were in public schools, according to Reuters.

Local governments have cut 300,000 education jobs since August 2008.

Stimulus money in 2009 helped states fix their budget shortfalls, but once the money was gone, some states were forced to implement widespread funding cuts.

I like it. It means there are fewer propagandists to indoctrinate the children.

I’m a Catholic grad and big fan of Catholic schools however

1) All your expensive “special education” is still covered by the public system (at least here in Indiana). That’s become a huge part of budgets, for better or worse.

2) They have the ability to terminate students that the public schools don’t have.

3) Most Catholic school kids have motivated parents trying to divorce themselves from a failed public system.

What does an Assistant Principal do, anyway?

Sure they do. They provide daycare centers for mothers who can’t be bothered with nagging children. sarc/

Re: your point 2 and the ability of parochial schools to kick out a pupil, that is true, but in the 10 years I spent in them never once did I know of any kid who got expelled. Our teachers had excellent control of the classrooms by far. Yeah, there were some lippy kids who broke the rules and got detention now and again, but that was it!

Deport the illegal aliens. They don’t pay incomes taxes to the State, live many to a household so there is less property taxes paid per person, etc.

When did it become required that public schools have assistant principals anyway? Somehow I managed to get through K-12 in liberal Southern Cali without ever once having an assistant principal. Somehow I came out of it functionally literate and prepared for college, which is more than can be said for a lot of today’s HS graduates.

Philadelphia schools are at the point of needing Marine squads to enforce a modicum of discipline and order in them.

Blackboard jungle, indeed.

Sounds like you and I went to the same elementary school. In my school’s office, there were three people: the principal, the school secretary and the school nurse. Period. No vice principal, assistants or aides or any other useless staff. And behavior problems, if any, were few and far between.
