In August 2011 during the 2011 United States debt ceiling crisis, Gowdy opposed the Speaker John Boehner’s debt limit bill, and he voted against the final debt ceiling agreement.[15] In December 2011, he told Congressional Quarterly that he will only support a measure if its sponsor can demonstrate that the Constitution gives the government the power to act in a particular realm.[5][16]

Gowdy worked on the Committee on Judiciary, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Gowdy developed a reputation as a tough questioner and frequently speaks on the floor of the House on issues ranging from Fast and Furious to his support for the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

In 2012, he received the Defender of Economic Freedom award from the fiscally conservative 501(c)4 organization Club for Growth. The award is given to the members of Congress who have the year's highest ranking, according to the Club for Growth's metrics. Gowdy scored 97 out of 100, and was one of 34 congressmen given the award.[17]

Gowdy considers himself "pro-life plus", meaning that he believes "in the sanctity of life" and that "the strategy should be broader than waiting for the Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade."[18]

While it’s great to see long-needed light of scrutiny shined upon the IRS, what do we think really is going to be the end result? We’re all going to take a hang-dog look and a sincere-sounding apology from Dan Wuerfel and a period of good behavior, only to have this crap all happen again in a couple years?

Unless the cancer of the IRS is cut away completely, it’s only going to become worse.. more angry and aggressive.

The IRS is created by, structured by, funded by and supervised by the oversight of the US Congress. While I admire and appreciate Gowdy, the concept of our broken addicted Congress fixing our broken, bloated, and addicted IRS is illusionary.

Until we have another 200 to 300 Gowdy’s or a Gowdy in charge of the Executive Branch strongly providing leadership, this mess will continue.

We must change the makeup of the participants in all branches of Government and with the recent appointment of Susan Rice, the makeup is still headed in the wrong direction.

Fortunately, that speech doesn't apply to me, even though I fly my children's class to Mexico ... then jet the kids to the Bahamas ... after which we fly together to Vail ... then we party in Vegas ... then we travel to Hawaii ... as we look forward to a rough summer in Cape Cod ... cause it's due to people like the Congressman that we have to lay off White House tour guides due to sequester!
