"You didn't vote for the party, why are you upset you got audited?" ... that effectively IS their entire line of questioning!!!

I think he was saying that Democrats see Social Welfare as taxpayer-funded Big Government programs -- and these, of course, deserve legal protection. On the other hand, Conservatives see Social Welfare within a broader context, with activists being able to play a role in many ways -- and (apparently) the Democrats responded, "That's a negotiable viewpoint; we are not convinced that legal protection is appropriate to this thing you refer to as social welfare."
