A lot of people knock Shep, but he is very good at covering breaking news.

“probably will be known as the father of tornado forecasting”

Actually, that title would belong to Robert Miller (Col, USAF) who, along with Ernest Fawbush issued the first and one of the most accurate tornado forecasts of all time (in 1947). Ironically, it was for Tinker AFB. He eventually went on to author Air Weather Service Tech Report 200 which was for years (and I believe still is) the bible of severe storm forecasting. I was trained by some of his “disciples” back in the late ‘70s in the AF Severe Weather Unit in Omaha.

Definitely true. Quite frankly after more consideration, I think in a city like this, your only option is to stay because as we saw tonight, enough people assume a confirmed tornado means everybody will get hit when only a relatively small area typically is hit. That led to the traffic barely even moving and sitting ducks on the highway. That said, I would call all my neighbors until I found somebody with a basement.

I was blessed as a kid....my parents built a safe room under the garage. Many aren’t so lucky.

Seeing reports of fans trapped in derbies at Busch Stadium, reports on Twitter repeating local news outlets(St Louis), others saying fans are held in shelter....conflicting reports....

At the company where I work (Philly suburbs), we have a lot of influx from people transferring in from other sites around the country. I always tell people, “rule #1: live at the top or near the top of a hill”. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes are exceedingly rare, but flooding from heavy rains happens. Bugging out can be worse than staying put, especially when this county alone has over half a million people. The best bet is to maintain a certain level of supplies.

All that said, this is a quiet zone when it comes to disasters. I once worked with a guy who was also a storm chaser and he was always complaining about how he was bored out of his mind.

This is the third time in less than two weeks that my family has been in the direct path of these tornado’s. I don’t know if my El Reno family is all right. One is a policeman.

Prayers. I have/had family on the freeway.

He was definitely a pioneer. I was talking about television.

England was the first on-air meteorologist to alert his viewers of a possible tornado using a commercial Doppler weather radar.[2] He is also known for contributing to the invention of the First Warning map graphic commonly used to show ongoing weather alerts without interrupting regular programming.

England is recognized, along with the firm Enterprise Electronics, as initiating development of the first commercial Doppler weather radar.

Can’t imagine people not being in shelter there frankly....had long lead time. Doubt the trapped reports are right, at least I hope. How horrid if true.

Lol...my ID has to do with an old joke that I can’t even remember now but it was about how democrats would vote for a yellowdog if it had a D by its name. I heard the joke on a local radio show right before I signed up on FR. Wish now I could remember the joke....

Wow... Will be in St. Louis/Grey Summit in August. Our Grand Rapids Griffens Red Wings farm club is in OKC for playoffs... hunkered down in a shelter. Game postponed.
