Washington Redskins name change urged by members of Congress By: Associated Press May 28, 2013 03:19 PM EDT
Ten members of Congress are urging the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is offensive to many Native Americans.
The representatives said Tuesday they've sent letters to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins sponsor FedEx and the other 31 NFL franchises.
The letter to Snyder says that "Native Americans throughout the country consider the 'R-word' a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos."
Among the group sending the letters are the leaders of the Congressional Native American Caucus: Tom Cole (R-Okla.(, and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.).
The nickname is the subject of a long-running legal challenge from a group seeking to have the team lose its trademark protection.

Back in the ‘70s a native baseball team from the Chilcotin country in B.C. called themselves the “Wagon Burners”.
Everyone got a laugh.
So, the Washington Bullets changed to the Washington Wizards because of the connection to violence. Now, the Washington Redskins will probably end up giving up the fight to the forces of PC. I guess the Washington Nationals will join the list of surrender monkeys soon enough. After all, “Nationals” is just too jingoistic. Maybe the Washington Multiculturals?
No, Actually it’s the S word for latinos. I had a friend who was Italian and we called ourselves SPIC and SPAN
“But will douchebag manufacturers object?”
Probably. :0)
A few years ago the Miami University Redskins got similar pressure. I suggested that the change the name Miami too so the entire Miami tribe could be erased from the history books. My idea didn't get very far.
What part of "never" do they not get?
You are, of course, right.
Language can, and is used to promote agendas. Politically correct speech is a form of censorship used to advance/channel users into a particular frame of mind. The word propaganda comes to mind......as does thought control.....
The dust up over a pro football team’s name, even though the “Victims” don’t object to its use, is nothing more than left wing bullying.
Sorry, your use of chin is offensive to the Chinese.
What business is it of theirs?
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
I’ve known some Indians and have to say the reddest skin I’ve ever seen was on an Irish guy.
How!
Congress can KMA!
Anyone...absolutely anyone born in the United States is a “Native American.”

I frequently yell, “I am a native American!”, when some clown on TV uses that term for Indians. (AFAIK, no Indian blood here.)
Me thank you for ping, Kemo Sabe!
ROFL! That one caught me by surprise. :)
