The Winchester (Va.) Police Department is taking a close look at its officers' weapons holsters after an officer's gun accidentally went off in a special needs school bus.

The incident occurred Monday morning when a middle school student reached for a police officer's gun, reports TV3Winchester. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The officer had been dispatched to the bus to calm down the student. While the officer was sitting next to him, the student reached over and put his finger on the trigger of the weapon. The bullet went through the seat and hit the floor.

I’ve come close to having to use my concealed gun twice. Both times I wouldn’t have had time to chamber a round.

I still prefer not to have a round chambered unless I am in a higher risk area.

Personally, I perfer a rifle, and am good with a pistol in 3-12 meters to get center of mass most times. The range I like with pistols is about 1 meter.

Give me a rifle, and I can call which eye the squirrel loses. With a .22, at 100 meters.

You have got to be comfortable with how you carry. I have carried condition one for 40 years and never a problem.

I remember when shooting was affordable. I don’t get to shoot much these days... reasonably priced ammo is scarce and I refuse to pay outrageous prices for ammo... so I conserve. You can still find premium ammo for decent prices but the deals are few and far between.

I have 'legacy' ammo. Stuff bought before Y2K. ;) Turns out the value has appreciated.

Last time a cop wanted to come in because of a harsh and cold north wind with spitting sleet, to talk about the stray dog down the street, I told him we'd talk on the porch because it isn't safe in my house for idiots, children, or LE. I was clearly unarmed.

He huffed and he puffed, but he finished getting the details on the errant dog pretty quickly.

I was wearing a pair of cut-off sweats. Never let 'em see you complain. NCO 101.

I froze my butt off. And locked myself out of the house. Bravado has a cost.

I would love to live in an open carry state.

When I first got a pistol, which was a .44 mag revolver, the gentleman who sold it to me told me that if I was to travel with it in the car, I needed to take certain steps.

He said 3 steps before being able to fire, access gun in glove compartment, access ammo in another compartment, in this case it would be a speed loader, then load the weapon.

After those three steps I would be ready to fire, and this would demonstrate to any officer that I am not driving around with a loaded gun with the intent of shooting people.

It would also demonstrate to any attacking criminal that I would essentially be unable to defend myself if taken by even the slightest amount of surprise.

Another reason I never applied for a permit is that I do not want to be on any list anywhere for any reason. Also why I am not a member of the NRA. I might be a little paranoid about that though.

They know me around here. I threw a bunch of 'em out of the skating rink when they were bratlings.

Bring a warrant, it goes easy.

Heh, well that list I do not mind being on.

No doubt I have said some things that have raised someone’s eyebrows somewhere in Washington...but screw them!

I should have said that I do not want to be on any kind of gun list, or gun owner list or any thing like that.

Thanks for having a good sense of humor. I would not like to test your weapon handling skills!

“I carry my 1911 style with one in the chamber, hammer half-cocked, safety on, in a nylon Mil-Tech holster that doesn't allow a finger on the trigger until you break the velcro.
I can clear nylon flip the safety off, and full-cock it in less than a second.”

I have a G.I. M1911A1, Para-Ord P13.45, and Series 70 Combat Commander. They have four safety devices: (1) thumb safety (engages only with hammer at full cock); (2) half cock (thumb safety cannot be engaged in this position); (3) grip safety (pistol will not fire unless pushed in); and (4) disconnector safety (to prevent firing unless the barrel and slide completely are locked).

You cannot carry this pistol on half-cock and engage the safety; the pistol must be on full cock to engage the safety. M1911 type holsters have a safety strap that goes between the hammer and slide in a condition one carry (round chambered, hammer back, safety on). The only way to apply the safety if the hammer is in half cock would require intentional modification to the action to allow this...or something’s wrong with the pistol internals.

You should join the NRA and stop fearing the Nazis. The NRA, JPFO and GOA are the only true Civil Rights organizations in America... period. The rest are tied to one race/religion or another but the NRA is simply Red, White and Blue. Your name is already on a list... you post here... you vote conservative, you are probably a Christian or Jewish and are probably a Republican. That is a lot of lists.

Firstly, I do not ever keep a round in the chamber.

Any gun I carry or keep ready for defense has a round in the chamber. It is the ones that you think DON'T have a chambered round that 'go off accidentally'. You don't get complacent when you darn well know there is one in the pipe.

All of the weapons here have a round in battery.

I use to have some around that did not have a round in... until I realized I could never remember which did and which didn't. And I got surpised a few times when one was there (by checking, NOT by it 'going off'). So now I know. There is always one there.

Yes, they definitely are civil rights organizations.

Especially the NRA. It’s interesting the government openly attacks a civil right and organizations that not only protect it but also teach people proper and safe ways to exercise it.

I will give it some thought, LLS.
