Jim Crow may be dead in most of America — but not at Columbia University.

Almost 50 years after the Civil Rights Act ended legal discrimination, the bastion of liberalism is finally trying to change one of its scholarships, which is restricted to “whites only.”

The Ivy League school’s Lydia C. Roberts Graduate Fellowship stipulates that the funds be given only to “a person of the Caucasian race.”

It sounds outrageous and unbelievable at first glance. I am assuming the reporter left out an important point. Columbia is probably administering the trust.

Even so, that only elevates it from outrageous and unbelievable to a mere surprisingly stupid. If Columbia has a problem with its fiduciary duty, they should just find another fiduciary. Then it wouldn’t be the ‘public’s business’

Exactly. Eliminate ALL race/ethnic scholarships then. Stop pretending that no one needs financial aid just because they’re white.

I agree, but it really isn’t nearly as dodgy as it seems when you take into consideration that the colleges are administering the endowments. Still slightly dodgy though.

We just went through all of the scholarship sifting...and, yes, you're right..there are race specific scholarships. Even ones that combine race with gender/rare talent/various other *qualities*.

It was clearly sarcasm by the first poster.

When I went back to college in 2004, I had to search really hard to find a scholarship that did not depend on my skin color or nationality.

Columbia University should have gotten the whites only rule on this 1920’s fellowship decades ago. On the other hand no one bats an eye when the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation sets up a scholarship fund only available to non-whites.
