Conservative groups have rejected an Internal Revenue Service apology for unjustifiably scrutinizing tax-exempt conservative groups during the 2012 election cycle. The IRS apology has seemingly validated conservatives' fears of politically motivated regulation.
House Republican leaders, meanwhile, have vowed to investigate.
Lois Lerner, the director the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt organizations, said that organizations had been given additional scrutiny if their applications included the words "Tea Party" or "patriot." The practice originated with "low-level" employees in Cincinnati, according to an Associated Press report.
In a press conference on Friday, Lerner called the actions of these employees "absolutely inappropriate."
"They didn't do it because of any political bias," Lerner said, adding that singling out groups with specific names was an ill-thought-out organizational "shortcut."
"It was an error in judgment and it wasn't appropriate but that's what they did," she said.
"We've now corrected these issues, and we don't expect that any of these will be repeated going forward."
Despite the apology, conservative groups are now seizing on the news, which they say proves their long-standing complaints of mistreatment by the IRS.
"President Obama must also apologize for his administration ignoring repeated complaints by these broad grassroots organizations of harassment by the IRS in 2012, and make concrete and transparent steps today to ensure this never happens again," said Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots.
Tea Party Express founder Sal Russo told ABC News that his group, formed as a PAC, never heard from the IRS but did hear from smaller Tea-Party groups that complained of government scrutiny.

Starting with the fascist government goon Napolitano’s. She’s the jackbooted bitch that set government policy to go after tea party patriots and veterans as terrorists.
Mark Levin’s Landmark Legal Foundation exposed this abuse of power. He is talking about it on his show right now.
so why’d they apologize if no one was asking for one? Some in the IRS doesn’t like the administration or did they know something was coming soon?
They were also looking for “progress” and “progressive,” right?
We might as well call this regime “The Untouchables”
Wow, if they were doing that, I'd HATE to be president of "Progressive Citizens of the Earth"! You'd never do anything BUT get audited!
There is a very simple, effective, and long lasting way to prevent this from happening again no matter which party is temporarily in the White House.
One fine Monday morning the entire staff of the Cincinnati IRS office forms up outside “their” building. In the back ranks are the “low level” functionaries, GS and contractor, and as you work your way to the front you find more important functionaries. At the very front you find Lois Lerner, the director the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt organizations.
They are informed by federal marshals that they have all lost their security clearances and have 2 hours to clean out their desks off any and all personal items. They can come back Friday to ick up their final pay checks.
They are also informed that if anyone wants to stay employed in any capacity by the federal government they have until close of business Wednesday to provide documented proof as to who violated their job description and who approved it. Those who don’t step forward will never work for the federal government again.
This gross violation of public trust occurred, like most of these violations, because the people involved figured they would never get caught much less punished.
Take that feeling of godhood away just one time and most of the federal bureaucracy will rapidly clean up their individual and collective acts.
After all, a generic apology goes a long way in restoring reputations, public trust, and private bank accounts; don’t it.
It should have happened last September.....
Are you suggesting some within the legitimate honorable IRS exposed this Nazi like oppressive behavior?
And they expect an apology?
Cold day in hell when that happens. IRS is an entity unto itself, and has been for years. The only way changes will be made it to expose them and the people who govern them.
*Putting hand to ear* What? Who? When? Prove it!
I’m mad as hell and I won’t take it any more!
Now they’re “mid level” IRS employees suckling at the taxpayer’s teat.
Can you imagine if the reverse had happened and it was dem groups that were falsely investigated by the IRS? Dems would not be calling for just investigations. They would be calling for impeachment hearings. This incident alone even without a “Benghazi” would be like a “Watergate” to them.
Kill the amnesty bill, take the house and senate in 14, drive a stake through deathcare, the pass flat tax, and put 100,000 IRS workers in bread lines.
Defund agency that creates regulations that obstruct the growth of enterprise... start with the EPA, Then abolish them.
Then defund Energy, the useless sump of all agencies.
Then Education. The front of communism’s successes in destroying the republic.
It’s a start.
Repeal Patriot, shitcan ATF and Homeland, and return FBI to respectable investigative integrity. Time to break up AT&T for complicity in the whole eschelon scheme too... and maybe Microsoft has conspired a bit too much too.
Hell, I can dream, yes?
Have no fear! Karl Rove's "American Crossroads" will outline the GOP's 2016 issues! Karl sees victory ahead in 2016!
Do I really need a SARC tag?
Were they ever legitimate?
We indeed have a right to know ALL who are involved in this scandal.
Nothing will be investigated.
How do I know this? Easy, because John traitor Boehner despises the Tea Party as much as the left does.
FIXED!
... and... Benghazi was instigated by a YouTube video
The second revolution is near, and these people better pray to God they aren't identified. They have few friends but many enemies.
