Detroit has a long history of making stuff cars, steel, even popcorn.
Now, the city is home to a manufacturing facility devoted to the production of an item not made at this scale in the U.S. for decades: Wristwatches.
A Dallas-based company has set up a production line for its Shinola brand of watches in Detroit.
Shinola officials say their watch production target for this year is 45,000, to be sold online, at flagship stores in Detroit and New York and at fashion and jewelry retailers and department stores around the country.

Hopefully they are good quality. Other wise you wouldn’t be able to tell sh*t from Shinola.

Manufacturing is good thing — but kids today don’t wear watches.

Probably no one under 40 has ever heard that expression.

The watch has gone the way of the buggy whip.

Shinola watches?
Shinola means shoe polishes and waxes in my world.
and I do know SH*t from SHINOLA and Shinola ain't watches.
I smell a Chinese or similar company doing a bad translation of an American word to come up with a cheap product.
Kinda like the Chinese automobile, the "Chery". Cherry = Chevy.

Yeah, that’s where the phrase comes from - shoe polish.
You have to tell the difference or your shoes get messed up.

Large flat screen TVs are also being assembled in Detroit now too. The components come from china still but the Minnesota company hopes to start manufacturing components around the midwest.

There is a lot more going on in Detroit than people realize. Canada has reopened the salt mines under the city. Lots of warehousing and freight related jobs will come with the new bridge.

The infrastructure is all there, might need some work but all the money is already in the ground. Really smart investors looking down the road a ways could do a lot worse than Detroit, especially around the river and downtown.

JP Morgan just opened some kind of regional HQ in Detroit as well.
The simple fact is that there is a certain degree of freedom to be found in Detroit that is pretty rare in most American cities. You can eat what you want, drink what you want, defend yourself, use paper or plastic, drive what you want etc.

I’m happy to see that it is really IN Detroit and not 30 miles outside in a suburb where the unemployment rate is not awful.

should add to the similar phrase of “doesn’t know to scratch his watch or wind his a**”
and yes, i can attest that at least ONE person under 40 knows that phrase.
