Houston, Tx --(Ammoland.com)- Today, May 6th 2013, two pro-gun bills finally passed in the Texas Legislature.
SB 864 by Senator Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels), the Senate companion to HB 47 by Representative Dan Flynn (R-Van), is headed toward the Governors desk. SB 864 will reduce the number of hours for a concealed handgun license to not less than four or more than six and will not include time on the shooting range or the range proficiency exam.
Rep. Flynn severs on the House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety. Hes a long-time friend to TSRA and to Texas gun-owners. This is Senator Donna Campbells first session in the Texas Legislature. Her counties include parts of Bexar, Travis, Guadalupe, and Hays plus all of Comal and Kendall County. We applaud her hard work and enthusiasm on behalf of Texans and CHLs.
SB 299 by Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls), the Senate companion to HB 1304 by Representative Kenneth Sheets (R-Dallas), is also headed to Governor Perrys desk. SB 299 adds a more clear meaning in Texas law for intentional failure to conceal by a licensee.
Representative Kenneth Sheets serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety where he regularly adds his voice in support of law-abiding gun-owners and Texas concealed handgun licensees. Senator Craig Estes serves Texans in 14 North Texas counties and was awarded TSRAs Legislator of the Year award for passing a comprehensive range protection bill in 2011.

Maybe they can drop the requirement to qualify with both a revolver and a semi auto if you wish to carry both.
and will not include time on the shooting range or the range proficiency exam.
That would be a yes to your question.
Are you sure that is a requirement?
TEXAS CONCEALED HANDGUN LAWS

Sorry, I found it. You are correct. I word searched for “revolver” in the laws and did not see it. Searching for “category” to me to it.
That should be removed, in my opinion as well.
Ummm... IIRC when I was licensed if you qualed with revolver you were licensed for revolver - if you qualed with pistol you were licensed for either.
That's not the current requirement. It is that 1. If you qualify with a revolver you may only carry a revolver; 2. If you qualify with a s/a you may carry a s/a and/or a revolver.
To me that's still a little too nanny-state to me. You are being taught when and when not to use deadly force, you are being taught the moral and legal consequences of carrying concealed, you are being taught where you can and cannot carry, and you must pass a 250 round course of fire.
After all that, does it really matter if you qualified with a revolver and two years later you decide to buy a Glock?
You could qualify with a Ruger Mark III and be licensed to carry a .50AE Desert Eagle, but if you qualify with a Smith & Wesson Model 19 .357 Magnum you can't carry a Ruger SR22P?
“Maybe they can drop the requirement to qualify with both a revolver and a semi auto if you wish to carry both.”
This is not the case now!!!
If you qualify with a pistol (semi-auto), you do not have to qualify with a revolver. If you qualify with a revolver, then you are restricted to revolvers and must qualify with a pistol to remove the restriction.
See post 11.
I guess the thinking is that any fool can run a revolver but it takes extra skill to run a pistol.
Be that as it may, the best strategy for qualifying is to use a pistol, even if you have to borrow or rent one.
Looks like the new bill with not change SA vs NSA requirement.

On the caliber, you must qualify with a centerfire - I think 9mm was the smallest round you could use - so you would not qual with a MkIII and then carry an Eagle (even if you could conceal one!).
I looked it up. The minimum is .32
Simply qualify with a pistol and you can carry a revolver legally. IF you qualify with a revolver you are restrcited to a revolver but no restriction if you qualify with a pistol.
No, you can't qualify with a handgun which shoots rimfire ammo. Centerfire only. Once qualified, you can carry a .22 rimfire if you wish (but it is not recommended to pi$$ off a potential victim).
