Back in 2011, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) declared war on energy-efficient light bulbs, calling "sustainability" the gateway into a dystopic, Big Brother-patrolled liberal hellscape. When the lights went off during Beyoncés halftime set at the last Superbowl, conservative commentators from the Drudge Report to Michelle Malkin pointed blame (erroneously) at new power-saving measures at New Orleans Superdome. And one recent study found that giving Republican households feedback on their power use actually encourages them to use more energy.
Why do conservatives, who should have a natural inclination toward conservation, have a beef with energy efficiency? It could be tied to the political polarization of the climate change debate.
A study out in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined attitudes about energy efficiency in liberals and conservatives, and found that promoting energy-efficient products and services on the basis of their environmental benefits actually turned conservatives off from picking them. The researchers first quizzed participants on how much they value various benefits of energy efficiency, including reducing carbon emissions, reducing foreign oil dependence, and reducing how much consumers pay for energy; cutting emissions appealed to conservatives the least.
The study then presented participants with a real-world choice: With a fixed amount of money in their wallet, respondents had to "buy" either an old-school light bulb or an efficient compact florescent bulb, the same kind Bachmann railed against. Both bulbs were labeled with basic hard data on their energy use, but without a translation of that into climate pros and cons. When the bulbs cost the same, and even when the CFL cost more, conservatives and liberals were equally likely to buy the efficient bulb. But slap a message on the CFLs packaging that says "Protect the Environment," and "we saw a significant drop-off in more politically moderates and conservatives choosing that option," said study author Dena Gromet, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School of Business.
The chart below, from the report, shows how much liberals and conservatives value each argument for efficiency: While liberals (gray) valued all three equally, conservatives (white), were significantly less moved by and most at odds with liberals over the carbon-saving argument.
>>I drive a car that gets ~38 MPG, it’s also heavy... and 30 years old.
Very interesting!! Is that an estimate or actual combined mileage? What is the engine displacement? Is it normally aspirated? To drag that huge hunk of steel around with mileage figures like that, you must drive very, very slow.
My 23 mpg car actually gets 28, if I drive it right. But I paid good money for 306 hp, so I use it—often! :-)
How about ‘nuke the midget lesbian whales’
>>You make a very important point. Societies that pay more in taxes or otherwise have low discretionary income are less environmentally clean, less innovative, and generally miserable places to live. The green movement and green parties of the world are very likely to create dirtier, less healthy environments.
I agree. The point that I didn’t clearly make is that Green(tm) = RED. It is all a sham to prepare people used to a rich, comfortable, plentiful consumer lifestyle for a communist lifestyle where purchasing power is based on connections and patience, not on work and income.
The ultimate irony of Green(tm) is that the people who think it is such a great idea lack the skills or discipline to survive in the post-consumer America where luxuries (and many necessities) will be paid for by barter for handmade goods or services. Most Leftists lack any skills (other than prostitution) to make or do anything of value in a society that doesn’t have tons of extra cash floating around. Moreso than anyone, they depend on the capitalist, “planet-killing” economy they hate!
I should be the one who decides if I want pay large upfront capital costs and lower downstream operating costs or vice versa. Not some government weenie who is looking out for the “collective.” The crux of the issue is whether free individuals can make their own economic decisions or whether we are infantile slaves and must have such decisions made for us by our “betters” in government.
We will NEVER get a payback on these LEDs...we simply don’t have the lights on in the kitchen that much.
Actual mileage, about Albuquerque to Las Cruces.
What is the engine displacement?
IIRC it's a retrofit of GM's standard 350 engine. (link)
Is it normally aspirated?
Yes. To drag that huge hunk of steel around with mileage figures like that, you must drive very, very slow.
Though I do try to keep it under 75 due to some overheating problems (I have a busted overflow tank I need to fix).
My 23 mpg car actually gets 28, if I drive it right. But I paid good money for 306 hp, so I use itoften! :-)
True, you can get a lot of difference in the style of how you drive.
>>Actual mileage, about Albuquerque to Las Cruces.
Oh, OK. That explains a lot. I could get 38 mpg on that drive. What do you get around town? That’s where I got my 23 mpg figure.
That’s an easy one. Just show us one or more of the following:
1. They save money.
2. They save time.
3. Are superior to the older products.
4. Are safer than the older products.
5. Are more convenient than the older products.
What’s so difficult about that?
Basically: Let me choose what works best for me and my family. It’s that simple.
I used to live in a house where it was more cost effective to use energy saving bulbs. However, for the last ten years I’ve lived in a home that is next to a forest... and we experience frequent power outages and surges. The energy efficient bulbs burn out too quickly when the power isn’t stable and are too expensive to replace.
Likewise.
You have to look at life cycle cost then weigh in convenience & other personal factors. Leftists can’t balance their checkbook and ignore the cost part. To make it worse, they really don’t understand science, and if they do try to evaluate the cost, get it all messed up.
I read somewhere that Libtard New York Governor Andrew Cuomo owns a fleet of 60’s era Muscle Cars.
In other news, Barbara Streisand owns a 25,000 Square Foot House that she and Husband occupy BY THEMSELVES.
Real lovers of the Earth they are.
My Toyota gets 43 mpg as long as I drive just under the speed limit. The only problem is that it wasn’t manufactured in America. It was manufactured in the Peoples Republic of California.
I was waiting for cost to go down, as well as experience with LED life.
I’m all for energy efficiency if it do not bite my butt as economic inefficiency!
I’ve now picked up a few of these at the discount area in HomeDepot.
The brightness has VASTLY improved and the cost is coming down rapidly. LED will be the light of the future.
AMEN!
Easy!
Make sure the COST over time is less than what we are buying now.
Nah...
How do they HEAT you in winter and COOL you in summer?
Not 'good' MORMONs in the heat of the summer!!

Verse 18-19
17, The day and hour of Christs coming will remain unknown until He comes; 814, Men must repent, believe the gospel, and obey the ordinances to gain salvation; 1516, Marriage is ordained of God; 1721, The eating of meat is approved; 2228, Zion will flourish and the Lamanites blossom as the rose before the Second Coming.
1 Hearken unto my word, my servants Sidney, and Parley, and Leman; for behold, verily I say unto you, that I give unto you a commandment that you shall go and apreach my gospel which ye have received, even as ye have received it, unto the Shakers.
2 Behold, I say unto you, that they desire to know the truth in part, but not all, for they are not aright before me and must needs repent.
3 Wherefore, I send you, my servants Sidney and Parley, to preach the gospel unto them.
4 And my servant Leman shall be ordained unto this work, that he may reason with them, not according to that which he has received of them, but according to that which shall be ataught him by you my servants; and by so doing I will bless him, otherwise he shall not prosper.
5 Thus saith the Lord; for I am God, and have asent mine bOnly Begotten Son into the world for the credemption of the world, and have decreed that he that receiveth him shall be saved, and he that receiveth him not shall be ddamned
6 And they have done unto the aSon of Man even as they listed; and he has taken his power on the bright hand of his cglory, and now reigneth in the heavens, and will reign till he descends on the earth to put all enemies dunder his feet, which time is nigh at hand
7 I, the Lord God, have spoken it; but the hour and the aday no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes.
8 Wherefore, I will that all men shall repent, for all are under asin, except those which I have breserved unto myself, choly men that ye know not of.
9 Wherefore, I say unto you that I have sent unto you mine everlasting acovenant, even that which was from the beginning.
10 And that which I have promised I have so fulfilled, and the anations of the earth shall bbow to it; and, if not of themselves, they shall come down, for that which is now exalted of itself shall be laid clow of power.
11 Wherefore, I give unto you a commandment that ye ago among this people, and say unto them, like unto mine apostle of old, whose name was bPeter:
12 aBelieve on the name of the Lord Jesus, who was on the earth, and is to come, the beginning and the end;
13 aRepent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, according to the holy commandment, for the remission of sins;
14 And whoso doeth this shall receive the agift of the Holy Ghost, by the laying on of the bhands of the elders of the church.
15 And again, verily I say unto you, that whoso aforbiddeth to marry is not ordained of God, for bmarriage is ordained of God unto man.
16 Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one awife, and they twain shall be bone flesh, and all this that the cearth might answer the end of its creation;
17 And that it might be filled with the measure of man, according to his acreation bbefore the world was made.
18 And whoso aforbiddeth to babstain from cmeats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God;
19 For, behold, the abeasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which cometh of the earth, is bordained for the use of man for food and for craiment, and that he might have in abundance.
20 But it is not given that one man should apossess that which is above another, wherefore the bworld lieth in csin.
21 And wo be unto man that asheddeth blood or that bwasteth cflesh and hath no need.
22 And again, verily I say unto you, that the Son of Man acometh not in the form of a woman, neither of a man traveling on the earth.
23 Wherefore, be not adeceived, but continue in steadfastness, blooking forth for the heavens to be cshaken, and the earth to tremble and to reel to and fro as a drunken man, and for the dvalleys to be exalted, and for the emountains to be made low, and for the rough places to become smoothand all this when the angel shall sound his ftrumpet.
24 But before the great day of the Lord shall come, aJacob shall flourish in the wilderness, and the Lamanites shall bblossom as the rose.
25 Zion shall aflourish upon the bhills and rejoice upon the mountains, and shall be assembled together unto the place which I have appointed.
26 Behold, I say unto you, go forth as I have commanded you; repent of all your sins; aask and ye shall receive; knock and it shall be opened unto you.
27 Behold, I will go before you and be your arearward; and I will be in your bmidst, and you shall not be cconfounded.
28 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, and I come aquickly. Even so. Amen.
On the stretch between Wolf Creek Pass into Pagosa Springs?
I've installed a $120 rubber gasket that seals the rotating tub and the front door on one.
It rubbed against itself over the last five years and holes developed; leaking all over the place.
(I'd hate to have found out what the Maytag Man would have charged me!)
