President Obama called NBA player Jason Collins Monday to offer his support after Collins announced he's gay, becoming the first openly gay major league professional athlete, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett has learned.
The president offered congratulations and support on Collins' courage and willingness to be the first in the four dominant pro sports to make this announcement.
First lady Michelle Obama also showed her support for Collins on Twitter Monday.
"So proud of you, Jason Collins! This is a huge step forward for our country. We've got your back!" she tweeted, signing it "-mo," which indicates she - not an aide - sent the message.

Collins’ stats have suffered because he’s been too preoccupied with the on-court scenery.
Im not surprised Michelle Obama has his back..I mean after all..when is the last time Michelle has been on HER back..probably been decades since we all know what team Obama plays on
Man, with all the fuss you’d think this guy had done something useful, like finding a cure for cancer, instead of glamorizing sticking his peepee in another man’s anus.
1. Potential wars and loss of millions of lives.
2. Disease which threatens potentially thousands or more.
3. Domestic terroristic threats.
4. Moral decay reflected in constant killings across the nation.
5. Immigrations issues which will severely affect people who have already lived here for generations who will be disenfranchised and left in abject poverty as a result.
6. Healthcare issues with the new law about to go into effect which may lead to the deaths of many children and adults due to the convoluted, confusing, unworkable healthcare plan.
7. Mockery of God and his Word which can lead to far worse consequences than ANY of the above, which apparently doesn't phase the bunch in power right now.
Oh Lord, please have mercy on us who fear YOU and save us from this evil...we beg YOU.
Things that do matter to the leftists and the administration:
1. Gay rights and the promotion of homosexuality and abortion.
Question: If it were you, leftists and haters of God, who were under assault and felt your way of life were being threatened and you had little or no hope, to whom would you appeal for help? God?
They will reap what they sow.
Got his back? Who is attacking him? Everyone is praising him for his courage. What’s the down side for him? Nothing.
He’s at the end of his career and he just guranteed himself a big fat media job.

Everybody, including 0bama and the jocksniffing, gay-loving lefty sports media, is being played by this guy. This is just a cynical move by a second rate player at the end of his career to get some press attention and maybe a shot at an announcing or “analyst” (and you can’t spell “analyst” without “anal”) job...or even catch on with a lousy team that could use some publicity. If he were that sincere, and that “courageous” he would have done this years ago.
I’m looking forward to the happy day when the unicorns get old and croak, and reality sets in — and homosexual behavior is once again seen as what it truly is: a disgusting and ugly sexual perversion, not a “cause” to be “celebrated”.
That day WILL come. Trust in GOD and have faith. The LORD abhors homosexual behavior.

I honestly don't know how much more of this I can take....
But tennis players and ice skaters (or high divers for that matter) didn't make much of an impression on Middle America or Black America.
The Obama's and their allies are betting that basketball or football players coming out as homosexual will push America and the African-American community further in the direction they want to go.
Hockey players and baseball players maybe not so much.
