The alleged Boston Marathon bomber is awake and responding to questions in his hospital bed.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is responding sporadically in writing to questions from investigators regarding other cell members and other unexploded bombs, law enforcement sources told ABC News.
The 19-year-old shoved his pistol in his own mouth and pulled the trigger as SWAT officers and federal agents closed in on the boat where he was hiding on Friday night. However, instead of killing him, the bullet simply tore through his neck.
Authorities initially said they couldn't question him because of the throat wound. CNN reports earlier today that Tsarnaev was 'intubated and sedated' at a Boston hospital.
The Boston police commissioner said Tsarnaev is in 'critical but stable' condition on Sunday - which appears to be a downgrade from reports earlier this weekend that his condition was only 'serious.'
Boston Mayor Tom Menino had earlier feared that federal agents would never be able to interview Tsarnaev but it seems that investigators may already be making progress.
Police sources told MailOnline that investigators are looking into the possibility that Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan had a suicide pact so that neither of them could be taken alive and put on trial. Authorities believe Dzhokhar likely killed him brother, who was handcuffed, when he ran over him....

Yeah, well this story seems to tell US he’s a lousy shot. ... But then he climbed out of the boat on his own power after a self-inflicted gunshot through the mouth into the neck? Sounds like the one making that story up didn’t know Jack shyte about human anatomy ... Whew, something really stinks about this.

We have MDs here. I have a question:
If this guy shot himself in the mouth. even if the bullet exited his neck (I am assuming the side of his neck, not straight back), how can he be intubated? Isn’t there damage inside his mouth?
I saw the pics. He has a mask over his nose and mouth and one picture showed an ambu bag, while another showed a respirator tube. At least on the left side of his face and neck, I saw no wounds.
Could someone with trauma experience explain what sort of damage would likely be incurred?
My only personal experience with trauma inside the mouth is a tooth extraction. I sure wouldn’t have wanted any foreign object inside my mouth even with that relatively low level of gum trauma.
Another wound issue: the Saudi royal relative has a burn on his hand. What I saw in the 2 pics available was a 4x4 gauze covering the back of his left hand. Otherwise, no burns, the fingers were interlaced, so probably no burns on the palm, either. Stove burns on hands are common and they are painful, yet this kid is sitting there with his hands together, smiling. A very minor little burn, it seems.
Meanwhile, there are people without limbs and with flesh shredded by shrapnel. They are the ones deserving of sympathy and compassion.
