"He still signed amnesty and was a conservative and probably one of the 20th century greatest presidents"

That argument is not a very good one. First Reagan said it was a huge mistake. Instead of the 1 million estimated we got 3 million and illegals flooded the country hoping to get the amnesty. Also the 86 deals was suppose to be a "One time and one time only" amnesty. But the promised enforcement never happened so now we have 25 or 30 million illegals here. The 86 deal is why we have the problem that we have today.

At least Paul puts border enforcement at the front end, Rubio and the gang of 8 put legalization on the front end and promise enforcement later. Been there done that and I ain't falling for that again. Once the border is secure and the current laws are being enforced then maybe we can talk about what to do with the illegals that have "put down roots". As I see it that is the jest of Paul plan.

Where did Reagan say it was a huge mistake? I want a quote.

That’s a pretty big statement to make to say he regreted it. He campaigned on it and it was a major policy of his in the 84 election. I was far too young then but that’s what my research suggests.

For Reagan to campaign on and sign amnesty and then regret it is a big leap to make and if you’re making that assertion I need better evidence than an assertion from a conservative writer who might have an agenda.

Just to add i’ve not read the diaries but all the evidence is he was campaigning on amnesty in 84 and signed it. I was like 6 then so didn’t live through it.

But the older posters here who I respect might be able to tell us more.
