The Boy Scouts of America called to end a long-standing ban on openly gay members, a spokesman said on Friday, but the organization's board must still vote in May on whether to ratify the resolution.

If the vote is approved, "no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone," Deron Smith, the organization's spokesman, told Reuters.

Smith noted that the decision drew from three months of research, surveys and discussions and was "among the most complex and challenging issues facing the BSA and society today."

The deliberations over whether to admit openly gay and lesbian members to the Boy Scouts has divided organizers, polarized its corporate and religious sponsors, and placed the group at the center of a nationwide debate over gay rights over the past two years.

"This is a historic change for the Boy Scouts," said Patrick Boyle, whose 1994 book "Scout's Honor" examined sexual abuse in the Boy Scouts of America.

I was in boyscouts, and i can tell you i would have quit before being placed in a camping situation with an openly gay boy.

We don’t camp with girls for the same reason. Moreover Homosexuality is a sin by biblical law and a disease by scientific definition.(it inhibits the biologically vital process of reproduction) The Boy Scouts of America would cease to be a organization build upon biblical(moral) law were it to embrace this behaviore.

Fifty years ago our troop went on a 50 mile hike in Olympic National Park, on the Elwah River Trail.

When we broke the last camp, after breakfast, we all gathered around the fire and put it out. I think there we were 14 scouts and two scoutmasters, all peeing on the fire.

I’m on the board of a local Kiwanis organization I will vote against any more funding of the BS if they bend over for the SSAD crowd. We give them thousands every year but no more.

All the sudden the BSA will condone the crime of sodomy? If they go through with this garbage, stick a fork in them, they are done. God does not change his views on sin, and you can not be a sodomite and be living your life according to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ever since this news cycle started the press has presented each step of the process as meaning that the Boy Scouts are going to make a policy change. They consistently want to keep any possibility that it might NOT change out of people’s minds. And now that the proposal has come to light, the gay activists are NOT happy - as it does not require Scout units to register gay adults.
