Sen. Cruz introduces alternative gun bills
The Hill ^ | 04/16/13 07:56 AM ET | Jonathan Easley

Posted on 04/16/2013 7:01:33 PM PDT by Red Steel

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday introduced two gun bills, one of which is co-sponsored by a group of 10 Republicans, many of whom signed a pledge earlier this month to filibuster attempts to pass gun control.

The measures provide an alternative to the gun control bill the Senate will begin debate on this week, which would expand background checks on gun purchases, crack down on gun trafficking and beef up security in schools. GOP senators have vowed to block that bill, claiming it goes too far and infringes on the rights of gun owners.

Cruz introduced a bill to “protect law abiding citizens by preventing criminals from obtaining firearms.” Among the 10 GOP co-sponsors are Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rand Paul (Ky.), and Mike Lee (Utah), all signers of the filibuster pledge. Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) is also a co-sponsor.

Cruz also introduced an alternative bill aimed at preventing the trafficking and straw purchasing of firearms that does not presently have any co-sponsors.

The text of the bills is not yet available.

A source close to negotiations told The Hill that Republicans are working on further legislation that would focus on enforcing, rather than expanding, the current background-check system and a bill that aims to improve mental health record-keeping.

A focused lobbying effort by families of the victims of the Newtown massacre last week and a background-check deal between Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), a centrist Democrat who has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, and conservative Republican Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.) created momentum for gun control legislation last week.

The Senate voted on Thursday to begin debate on the original bill and amendments despite filibuster threats, but the measure still faces an uphill climb. Democrats will need a handful of Republicans to vote in favor of a final bill to send it to the House, but the party can’t count on all of its members to support a final bill.

Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier pointed to the NRA’s decision to grade lawmakers' votes on a procedural motion for the bill — a move that deviates from the group's standard protocol — as evidence the effort “to prevent such legislation is gaining momentum."

Sens. Manchin and Toomey are working to rally support for their background-check provision, and other senators are working on alternative gun bills, including Sens. Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and Graham.

I agree pass the 2nd amendment in many languages, with the clause that all acts which in anyway abridge the right of the people to keep and bare arms are hereby repealed.

Let’s tack an amendment on it that will deny Federal Funds to institutes of higher learning that hire felons convicted of gun crimes, bombings, etc.

Or conspiracy to commit the above.

Now misdeameanor crimes are used to deny ownership and possession and crimes of that nature, which happened decades ago with no further incidents in the persons history to warrant a denial, are being used to deny them their right!

I never did understand how they got away with that bit of ex post facto law.

He should introduce a bill to repeal the 1934, 1968 and 1986 gun control acts in their entirety.

Heck, I'd donate to his campaign if he did that.

-- I never did understand how they got away with that bit of ex post facto law. --

They used "court logic" which is similar to "Alice in Wonderland" logic.

Congress made a new crime, not a new penalty for an old crime, goes the logic.

Just another example of how corrupt the courts are, on the right to keep and bear arms.

To: I cannot think of a name

I have a simple law.

The only requirement to purchase a firearm is that you must have a valid voter registration card.

Set the limits for a voter registration card as you desire.

(Suck on that liberals)

Wonderful idea!

Here go the Republicans again. The Democrats want to infringe on our rights and
the Repubs say ""No, we can do it better"", in fact doing the same damn thing, same result.

The Republicans are no longer Republicans, They are DEMOCRATS!

REPUBLICANS ARE DEMOCRATS! They are no different!!!

It's time for limited-government candidates to step up to the plate.

It’ll be interesting to see the details and compare them with the feel-good bills that Obama has out there.

” no thanks cruz...SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED !!!

how friggin hard is that ??? “

I have an idea for politicians..

Pay scale.

If you introduce legislation, or a new bill, you get $50,000/yr

If you vote against everything new $200,000/yr

If you stay home, and watch TV, $1,500,000/yr, and a new Lexus.

cept many people vote in POTUS elections because they WANT to think congress is fixin things.

Looking back at the tax cut extension fight and then passage of VAWA I think this latest one on guns is more what I like to see.

In the other two no other alternative bills were offered and Obama pretty much got what he demanded, passed by Senate then the House.

But in this one on guns there are GOP alternatives (”Those dirty rotten traitors sold us out” LOL) yet it looks like Obama will get nuffin on it. I like the second result better. To me results trumps 'intentions' wrt to the elected.

The big one is amnesty next. Not optimistic just yet but you never know..

My only thoughts on Cruz, et al., is that they are jamming the system to counter what’s on the table.

I’m not there, and they are, so maybe they’re doing whatever they can do to stall/jam the bill.

But yeah, I’d like to see, for every bill the commie dems try to pass banning guns, I’d like to see Tea Party senators matching it with amendments repealing existing unconstitutional laws as attachments.

Obama fixed health care. Next year the uninsured will be a thing of the past.
Like Naxi-ism it will only live in the history books. We have moved forward (a Great Leap like China did) and shown the world how great we can be DA_DA_DA

Obama heals LOLOL

Pretty much spot-on.

The dems want us overrun, undermined, and erased.
