Sowell: Fact-Free Crusades (Gun control)
Creators Syndicate ^ | April 16, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

Amid all the heated, emotional advocacy of gun control, have you ever heard even one person present convincing hard evidence that tighter gun control laws have in fact reduced murders?

Think about all the states, communities within states, as well as foreign countries, that have either tight gun control laws or loose or non-existent gun control laws. With so many variations and so many sources of evidence available, surely there would be some compelling evidence somewhere if tighter gun control laws actually reduced the murder rate.

And if tighter gun control laws don't actually reduce the murder rate, then why are we being stampeded toward such laws after every shooting that gets media attention?

Have the media outlets that you follow ever even mentioned that some studies have produced evidence that murder rates tend to be higher in places with tight gun control laws?

The dirty little secret is that gun control laws do not actually control guns. They disarm law-abiding citizens, making them more vulnerable to criminals, who remain armed in disregard of such laws.

In England, armed crimes skyrocketed as legal gun ownership almost vanished under increasingly severe gun control laws in the late 20th century. (See the book "Guns and Violence" by Joyce Lee Malcolm). But gun control has become one of those fact-free crusades, based on assumptions, emotions and rhetoric.

What almost no one talks about is that guns are used to defend lives as well as to take lives. In fact, many of the horrific killings that we see in the media were brought to an end when someone else with a gun showed up and put a stop to the slaughter.

This is no secret to anyone with two brain hemispheres to rub together. Unfortunately, zombies everywhere are starving because of the leftists' lack of those very hemispheres.

Thank you for the ping, Jaz.

Sigh... I know. Can’t let it defeat us, though.

“Leniency toward criminals has long been part of the pattern of gun control zealots on both sides of the Atlantic. When the insatiable desire to crack down on law-abiding citizens with guns is combined with an attitude of leniency toward criminals, it can hardly be surprising when tighter gun control laws are accompanied by rising rates of crime, including murders.”

Taking theses two facts together it would appear that all theses liberals really want is a country that is constantly victimized by the criminal element which they favor.

Criminalize law-abiding, tax-paying Americans, and provide amnesty (that isn’t really amnesty, Rubio said it so it must be true) to foreign lawbreakers.

It’s a lot like Lee Marvin in the the movie `The Dirty Dozen’ saying: “Feed the Germans. Shoot the French.” Our government has declared war on the USA.

Thomas Sowell is a national treasure. His books should be required reading. Pure logic, facts, and reason.

It fits perfectly with the thesis of Adam Smith:
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. - Wealth of Nations (Book I, Ch 10)
When “people of the same trade” are journalists, and they “meet,” virtually at least, not for “merriment or diversion but precisely over the issue of what the news is - and when they have been doing so continually over the AP newswire for well over a century and a half, what you get is not only a unified journalism which is “a conspiracy against the public” but a political party which aligns itself with that conspiracy. A party which promotes laws to disadvantage the law-abiding public while excusing and defending those who do not abide by the law.

Have the media outlets that you follow ever even mentioned that some studies have produced evidence that murder rates tend to be higher in places with tight gun control laws?

A recent study by 2 Harvard professors of Russia's gun laws found that it's per capita murder rate is almost 4 times higher than the US rate. This despite a total handgun ban for virtually all Russians except police and military personnel, and licensed long guns are only allowed for licensed hunters and must be stored except during hunting season. The study found that the majority of murders in Russia are committed with bare hands and/or improvised weapons such as knives, clubs, tools, ropes, etc.

IIRC I posted a brief summary of the Harvard study on FR several weeks ago, but I may be thinking of something else I intended to post on that same subject but never got a roundtoit.

Thanks...That’s very interesting and most telling, our media completely ignores it.
