ROCKUMENTARY: APRIL 6, 1970

Where were you on Monday, April 6, 1970?

I should have been in a six month “industry” period working at a lab somewhere, but I was scheduled to attend ROTC Summer Camp (basic training) at Indiantown Gap that summer, and that necessitated changing things around. As a result, I now saw contemporaries that I knew as a freshman but with whom I had lost contact due to differing industry periods.

The Vietnam War was coming home as demonstrations escalated, so it wasn’t an enjoyable time to be in ROTC. We heard a lot of “Make love, not war!” Our own ROTC slogan, “Make love and war!”, didn’t go over so well. The hippies were hogging all the sex, something for which I’ve never forgiven them.

Let’s cue the Rockumentary theme!

Bobby Sherman had been an in-house singer on ABC’s “Shindig”, and now he managed to come up with a recording career of his own as a “bubble gum” singer. He took it all in stride and didn’t mind getting kidded about it. This came in at #10 this week.

This was written and produced by Paul McCartney and appeared in the movie “The Magic Christian”. What I loved about this group was those George Harrison-style guitar riffs. It came in at #9 this week.
