State Sen. Malcolm Smith and city Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested this morning on charges they were plotting to rig this years mayoral election through fraud and bribes.
The pols allegedly formed an alliance built on cash payments and fraud to get Smith one of the states top Democrats placed on the GOP mayoral ballot, sources said.
FBI agents arrested them both at their Queens homes shortly after 6 a.m.
[snip] Prosecutors are planning to lay out the whole sordid scheme during a news conference later today.

Don't let the media try to fool you on this one....watch it carefully...read this article and all those to come...should be fun.
Bloomberg doesn’t want any competition.
State Sen. Malcolm Smith, city Councilman Halloran arrested in 'bribery plot' to rig mayor race
I wonder what happened to change it.
Bloomberg isn’t running again.
Sounds like more Republicans are going to bite the dust over this one than Democrats.
Are there any Tea Partiers in NY? Sounds like they need some.
My first guess, without going into the details, many of which aren't yet visible anyway, would be Cuomo. My second guess would be Bloomberg.
I regret to say that I assume nowadays that cases are not prosecuted to do justice for its own sake. The flat-foots at the FBI and NYPD do the hard work of investigation, and then the political people decide which cases to pursue based on the need to protect some pols and eliminate others. In a case like this, politics finds its way into the investigation as well, since many of the bribes would not have been offered without undercover agents prompting or even suggesting them.
There certainly seems to be a higher rate of corruption and improprieties among black elected officials.
EXCERPT Reports of political rot in Albany keep a-comin with revelations this week by The NY Post of probes of top Democrats in a sleazy deal that, by his own admission, even ensnared ex-Gov. David Paterson. For starters, the feds are investigating whether state Sens. John Sampson and Malcolm Smith, and others, were involved in a scheme to steer a multibillion-dollar contract to a politically juiced firm, AEG, to run a racino at Aqueduct Race Track.

Authorities arrested five Republicans: City Councilman Daniel Halloran, Queens County Republican Party Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone, Bronx County Republican Party Chairman Joseph Savino, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret.
To prevent duplication, please do not alter the published headline, thx.
“Sounds like more Republicans are going to bite the dust over this one than Democrats.”
They are two sides of a bad penny. Symptomatic of a political system that is corrupt beyond our wildest imaginations! Probably better in Kiokuk, Iowa, but not good there either!
“There certainly seems to be a higher rate of corruption and improprieties among black elected officials.”
Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! You’ve broken the code. RAT run cities, bad, BLACK RAT run cities, and order of magnitude worse. Go Google any major city’s list of mayors. The were running well until the RATs started winning the mayor’s office, then the BLACK RATs took over and it was downhill, full speed to bankruptcy (Just take a look at Detroit for starters, or even Oakland, CA). Black “leaders” make a corkscrew look straight by comparison.
Yep, & amen to it. So where are those Tea Partiers?!
“Yep, & amen to it. So where are those Tea Partiers?!”
Are there any in New York? But as an aside, the Tea Party has brought us some “klinkers.” Not corrupt, just flawed so the voters passed on their candidacy. I intensely hate the GOPe, but the Tea Party has a way to go in vetting candidates that are both conservative and competent. We would be in control of the US Senate today if it were not for Angle, Mourdock, Akin, and O’Donnell. The loony Right is as bad as the loony Left. It’s a Hobson’s Choice. You get a GOPe moron who operates like Boner, or you waste your vote on someone who has no chance of being elected because he articulates view that people can’t accept.
There certainly seems to be a higher rate of corruption and improprieties among black elected officials.
Three of those arrested are black and three are white.
“Three of those arrested are black and three are white.”
Now keep expanding your search.
Look at the elected officials that the Feds have either brought down in recent months (Nagin, Kilpatrick, Jackson), and currently investigating Gray in DC.
Look at the elected officials that have been found corrupt in the past (Barry, Mayor of Birmigham, and a myriad of lesser elected black officials that we regularly read about).
Look at the Congress members recently coming under ethics investigations (Waters, Rangel).
There is a higher rate of corruption among black officials. This is obvious. We should not be afraid to voice the truth.
But, to address the specifics of your three black official-three white officials in the present case, there are far more white New York state Senators than there are black New York state Senators. Thus, the three corrupt black Senators represents a higher rate of corruption among the New York state Senators than the white rate.
New York may be the place to be for finance, theater, sports, etc., but you guys don’t hold a candle to Chicago, Boston or even Los Angeles when it comes to political corruption.
On a scale of 1 to 10, this one registers a 1 on corruption, but maybe a 7 or 8 on stupidity!
