Sandy-hit Shore homeowners ask: "Where is the money?"
Philly.com ^ | 4/1/2013 | Amy S. Rosenberg

Underwater doesn't even begin to get at the heart of Maurice Corkery's predicament.

"This was my summer home," the Delaware County plant manager said of his little rancher on Third Street in Ocean City, N.J., flooded with its foundation cracked - totalled, really - by Sandy.

"I was trying to think of a time line," he said. "It's been so long. I'm so screwed up. I haven't seen any money. Where is the money? All they do is talk about it."

[snip]

"It seems like people who are responsible and have paid for coverage are the losers," he said. "The storm was bad enough. The red tape is a joke."

The stories seem to be everywhere about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) - a month ago, Gov. Christie called its response awful - but FEMA spokesman Dan Watson released statistics last week that showed 94 percent of the state's 73,778 claims had been settled.

The FEMA statistics have at times been at odds with state statistics released previously. In February, Christie said just 30 percent of the flood claims had been settled; FEMA said 50 percent.

The state has since washed its hands of any attempt to run interference with the federally regulated program, state Banking and Insurance Department spokesman Marshall McKnight said. Any complaints the state receives regarding flood insurance now are referred to a hotline FEMA set up after the governor's criticism, 1-800-427-4661

why does this cat expect somebody else to pay for this?

He doesn't. Read the story. He paid his federal floods insurance premiums as required and is now getting stone-walled.

jealous much?

It was a little crap rancher he bought 16 years ago

Some people these days pay more for cars
Not that it matters

He was forced to buy insurance
Now he expects his claim to be honored and he is being ignored

What is all this f$&k “the rich” stuff?
Don’t pay their insurance claims, seize their bank deposits, wipe out their bond investments

When contract law stops applying to “the rich” it stops applying to all of us

The stories seem to be everywhere about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

Except in the national media.

Please remember that a lot of these homes (Ocean City, especially) are really bungalows that have been handed down for several generations of family. The houses are often one on top of each other with sandy yards and usually a few blocks away from the ocean.

I’m up at the northern Jersey shore where the rich have second homes. It now looks like Syria on a bad day.

He isn't asking for sympathy. He is asking for the claim to be paid for the $1,700 a year insurance premium he has been paying.

well he probably lied, “what’s wrong with that? everybody does it”—that’s the eastern mindset

Well the western mindset says that if it was a second home and you lied to get insurance on it, then you are SOL.

Homeowners insurance argues with FEMA regarding whether the damage is wind related (homeowners would pay) or flood (FEMA would pay) -
____________________________________________

In April 2011 we were in the line of tornadoes that reached from Alabama and north as far as NY...

A lot of people died including several in our county...

and a lot of houses were totalled or damaged...

Then in March 2012 we had more tornadoes but not as bad...and miraculously no loss of life in our county..

again some houses were damaged...

FEMA came here and took over and stayed several months both times...

and very little got done etc much like the Sandy problems..

Then last summer we had what they called “linear winds” and there was a few shingles off roofs and gardens got blown arouns but nothing major...

other than my corn getting knocked down, my property again was OK...

And FEMA didnt come here...

Then the next day I noticed some shingles from my roof on the ground and mentioned it to my neighbor...

she said that she heard on the radio that people were to contact their insurance companies because the damage might have happened during the original tornadoes...

I went to my insurance company thinking I would have to mess with FEMA but No, FEMA was long gone and wouldnt be coming this time and I could just work with my insurance company alone...

The same insurance that cant replace or repair a house for those who lost their homes due to the tornadoes because FEMA got involved could fix mine without FEMA...and right away..

HURRAH...

the same day a guy came out got on my roof and told me that several people in our county were getting new rooves due to damage from back during the 2 tornadoes that was not identified at that time...

he found shingles several places on my roof that were missing or loose fround the tornadoes..

the insurance adjuster came the next day and agreed with him about my roof..

Upshod by the new month I got a whole brand new roof on my 20 yo house and new gutters and the people who had been waiting due to FEMA are still waiting 2 years later...

Do I need to say that none of them are Holder’s people ???

I thought federal flood insurance was only supposed to be available for primary residences.

No, It is available for secondary/vacation homes, but the rates they pay was recently raised.

http://nfipiservice.com/Stakeholder/pdf/bulletin/w-12043.pdf On May 31, 2012, the President signed HR 5740, which extended the NFIP’s authority through July 31, 2012. Section 2, Exclusion of Vacation Homes and Second Homes from Receiving Subsidized Premium Rates, amended the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 to allow the phase-out of subsidized premium rates as follows: (see link)

NFIP is run by the government, that’s why it’s so broke. Just wait until Zer0care kicks in fully.

Those of us on the Gulf coast have a real good idea what NJ looks like. We have seen it many times before.

Of course there is a difference in FEMA Flood insurance and any other FEMA help during a disaster (which is not nearly as organized as local help) - Your homeowners insurance pays on any wind damage or storm damage and usually does not cover any water damage where water rises - (flood). If there is no flood involved but a disaster zone declared, FEMA can offer grants or low-interest loans. And I'm glad to know FEMA even showed up in Middle America - I thought they totally ignored you all!

A few years ago when there was a huge wildfire burning through Central Texas there was a local response that was just amazing. Some folks were given access to a school and set up beds for the volunteer firefighters to rest - they had access to the showers and a large grocery store chain (HEB) brought in a large food prep trailer and fed real hot meals to the volunteers. Then FEMA arrived..... they tried to shut everything down and insisited all helpers wear FEMA shirts...they wanted to stop the meals and hand out some kind of meal bars - basically the locals told them they were handling it and continued doing what they did.

Really? there is not a single home in your general area that is in a flood zone? Would you provide your zip code or some other general location description?

You live in Tornado Alley - perhaps your friends/neighbors shouldn’t be allowed to rebuild in such a dangerous area. And yeah I am being ridiculous..... every area has risks.
