Many of the stockers also seem to think they are in the store by themselves. Between themselves and their carts, they block the aisles and are very slow to move. They come shooting out of an aisle, nearly running into customers who are moving in the main throughway.
Sheesh.
Items are basically the same price at Target and Walmart but if you use your Target REDcard you get a 5% discount making Target the better deal.
Being a former Walmart employee and current customer (albeit out of necessity since there are no other choices in my rural community), I can honestly say that everything in this story is true. The three stores in my immediate area all have empty shelves and skeleton crews, with most of the cash registers perpetually closed. Bentonville has really shot itself in the foot.
No, Walmart's been doing that for a long time. Like the article says, store managers are rewarded for slashing payroll and hours down to the bare minimum.
Recent funny story about Walmart self checkout. First, I am one that avoids them if I have over 2-3 items. Cannot go through them without “unexpected item in bagging area” repeatedly, etc.
We normally shop about 7-8 am on Sunday mornings. Love it for so many reasons. But a couple of weeks ago, the store we normally go to was trying some new process where they only had self checkout open. After the poor kid had to log into my register way too many times, we slunk out of the store. Needless to say, Sunday had 2 regular checkout lanes open.
The only 40-hour employees at Walmart are the managers. 30 hours and under are the norm for the regular employees, and those who go over their assigned hours (and heaven forbid, earn overtime), are “coached” (i.e. warned) to never do it again under threat of termination.
That sounds about right. My local store is currently undergoing a while-open renovation, and seems to have plenty of stuff on the shelves, except for ammo.
First World problems. I’m guessing African children that only eat 3 times a week and have no shoes would be thrilled to shop at a Walmart that isn’t stocked to capacity...if they had any money at all
First, customer service is almost nonexistent. I waited 5 minutes at a Penney's in the mall for some help. I gave up and left without buying anything. Good luck at Target. Shelves are a mess, customer service employees are not to be found.
I now shop mostly on line. I buy few things at retail stores.
Joseph A. Banks has excellent service for men's apparel but only buy things when they are on sale. Dick's Sporting Goods is ok. Other than that I will not walk into a retail store.
And they, like the employed from all the other mega employers (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc...) will ALL BE COUNTED AS EMPLOYED because they worked ONE hour during the reference week.
I try and post this as frequently as I can so (I hope) Freepers can make this point to others. That high unemployment rate is far worse than any of you can know.

I stopped shopping at Walmart’s when they stopped selling ammo in DE.
You must live in a Twilight Zone area.
A lot of people try to get around labor laws with the ‘sub contractor’ situation. And for a pay by the job basis, you MIGHT get away with it. But the very first time you require them to show up at a specific time and do not allow them to leave without threat of losing money, they become employees.
Many a mechanic shop has learned this the hard way. They get away with it for a time, until someone rats them out.
Trying to find an employee in ANY of our local Walmarts is ridiculous. Took me 45 minutes to get a key made in one that didn’t have a car dept and only hardware. One poor guy stood there the whole time with me with his little paint sampler to try and get a paint can made. I talked to a manager THREE TIMES, all in which she made a call on her radio for an employee to come to hardware. Both of us finally left and went to a different Walmart. I know this isn’t the case in all of them, but it just makes me dread having to go walk four football fields to find an employee. And if I find one, not have them pass me off to some unseen employee.

Same here. It’s because they move items around so you can’t find them. It’s the oldest marketing trick in the world. Their research proves that the longer you’re in the store the more you spend on impulse items.
A friend of ours worked there a couple of years ago. Every morning she was handed a ‘map’ of items to be moved from one location to another. Sometimes only a few feet away or down one shelf. That’s all she did, every day.
For prices, I call BS. Target is usually 10 to 15% higher on a lot of items (maybe diapers are an exception) and you mean if you give Target access to your CHECKING ACCOUNT TO USE THEIR DEBIT CARD you get 5% discount? No thank you.
