25,000 U.S. Deaths Linked to Sugary Drinks ABC NewsBy Katie Moisse | ABC News – 8 hours ago

In a study that's sure to shake up the soda ban debate, Harvard researchers have linked the sugary drinks to 180,000 deaths a year worldwide, 25,000 in the United States alone.

"We know that sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to obesity, and that a large number of deaths are caused by obesity-related diseases. But until now, nobody had really put these pieces together," said Gitanjali Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and lead author of the study presented today at the American Heart Association's annual meeting in New Orleans.

Singh and colleagues spent five years putting the pieces together. Using data from national health surveys around the world, the team tied sugar-sweetened beverages to 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 44,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and 6,000 deaths from cancer in 2010.

The study adds to mounting evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages, loaded with calories that carry little nutritional value, are a public health hazard.

"I think our findings should really impel policymakers to make effective policies to reduce sugary beverage consumption since it causes a significant number of deaths," said Singh, adding that she thinks "cause" is an appropriate word despite the limitations of the association study.

The American Beverage Association criticized the study, which has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, calling it "more about sensationalism than science."

Government paid for this study,

and the media go along with the hoax

just a few examples of recent stories shows that government/socialism doesn't work.
1. government funding global warming hoax for decades
2. gov schools suspending kids for chewing poptarts into “shape of gun”
3. gov raiding people's home because of a pic on the internet of a boy holding a gun
4. 1.5 million $ gov grant to study why lesbians are fatter than gay men
many more

many more

Attention Harvard: More people die as a result of homosexual sex than drinking soda pop. Which should we ban first?

Research grants are becoming hard to come by in these days of the sequester. Expect to see more and more dire predictions of impending doom coming out of academia by researchers hoping to shake the last few dollars from the governmental money tree.

I recall a study from several decades ago that cyclamates or maybe it was the saccharine one that using that artificial sweetener would cause cancer.

It was only later that it was revealed that one would have to consume about 800 cans (12-oz) of soda PER DAY for the danger to occur.

But, you can bet, several researchers and their institute(s) got a handful of money to provide the original studies.

I will agree that soda-pop is bad. But it’s consumption is none of the Federale’s business.

I wonder if this is part of a set up for lawsuits against “Big Beverage.” They have money, and you can bet the Feds want it...

They are coming after your cold ones next.

I'm not sure if you say this tongue in cheek, but I wouldn't be surprised if within the next 10 years there isn't a real push to ban (or at least heavily tax, a la tobacco) non-diet soft drinks.

Once the government pays for people's health care, then it thinks it has the right to regulate behavior. One of the biggest factors in the restrictions on cigarettes were the medicare/medicaid costs for smokers at end of life. We will see this story again. I have no doubt.

“Singh and colleagues spent five years putting the pieces together.”

Really? It would take me five minutes. Eating and drinking crap is bad for you. Duh. But so what.

“The study adds to mounting evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages, loaded with calories that carry little nutritional value, are a public health hazard.” Ah...a PUBLIC health hazard. I see where this is going.

“I think our findings should really impel policymakers to make effective policies to reduce sugary beverage consumption since it causes a significant number of deaths,” This is a very political sounding ‘doctor’.

Given enough grant money, researchers can link anything to anything else.

Yep. I can prove that mice can live under water if I use enough fish in the control sample.

In 2009, the EPA declared ‘carbon dioxide’ a dangerous pollutant that can and will be regulated.

Not only can sodas be regulated, humans, who exhale carbon dioxide, can be ‘regulated’ too. Death centers will be established under some program of ‘pollutant reduction’.

The EPA instead of the Defense Dept. will murder American citizens. Don’t laugh, it’s coming!

“OK then, case closed. More people croak from soda pop than from guns.”

Well, are they assault sodas?

That is hilarious, assault soda, these liberals are just dumb, their brains have been eaten away by their inanity

I have it from a good source that ANYONE that drank Whole Vitamin D milk during the War of 1812 died.

Also, this past St Patricks day (AS on every Amateur Night) the reports are rampant that 40%(pick a #) of traffic deaths are alcohol involved.
By all means, YES do something about that.
BUT
Wouldn’t your time be better spent (safely) to eradicate the cause of the other 60% also?

In a study that's sure to shake up the soda ban debate

It shouldn't "shake up the debate", as the debate isn't about sugar, whether it's good, bad or neutral. The debate is about whether government should control people's lives. I'm against nannyism myself.

“Bloomberg think so. The question remains, do people have the right to abuse their bodies?”

Yes OF COURSE people have the right to abuse their bodies!

Besides, who decides what is abuse?

People argue and present scientific evidence that suggests that eating meat or eating wheat based products (bread, pasta) “abuse” the body.

Should we limit a person’s intake of bacon? Two slices a week?

Eggs have cholesterol - should we ban them?

Beyond diet, should we regulate people’s sexual choices- statistically gay males have a MUCH higher chance of contracting AIDS than heterosexuals - should we criminalize male homosexuality?

I don’t think Bloomberg is gonna go there.
